Fitbit soared to the No. 1 spot in Apple’s App Store on Christmas

Fitbit reigned as the top wearable in Apple’s App Store on Christmas. The leader of the wearables market boasted the No. 1 free app in the App Store on December 25, which seems to indicate a bevy of device activations.

The Fitbit app soared 20 spots to claim the No. 1 position in the Apple App Store’s top chart of free apps in the U.S. during Christmas afternoon, according to Quartz. Unsurprisingly, Fitbit has thrived in the fourth quarters of previous years. Last fourth quarter, the company sold about 5.3 million devices, more than the previous three quarters combined.

Fitbit has been the most downloaded health and fitness iOS app every day in December, according to data from mobile analytics firm App Annie cited by Quartz. Christmas Day was the first time its app was the top free Apple Store app. (Fitbit’s app was still the No. 1 free iOS app as of the publishing of this article.)

Earlier this month, the International Data Corporation (IDC) released a report forecasting 214.6 million worldwide shipments of wearable device units in 2019. In 2015, the firm expects 80 million shipments of wearables.

There has been plenty of talk about smartwatches killing off activity trackers like those manufactured by Fitbit, Jawbone, Garmin, and others. While those expectations are likely premature, IDC notes that smartwatches are and will remain the most popular category of wearable devices.

Samsung Galaxy Glasses leak

While Samsung already has a bunch of wearables, its upcoming smart glasses might tighten the experience even further. A new leak from SammyGuru offers an early look at the Galaxy Glasses Manager app, the companion app Samsung is expected to use for its new smart glasses.

The leak does not reveal final pricing, battery life, launch date, or every hardware spec. Unlike your typical leak that just hints at a device, the companion app actually makes it sound more real.

Ray-Ban Meta glasses owners are getting less free use out of one of the glasses' AI features starting this month. Conversation Focus, which isolates and amplifies the voice of the person a wearer is talking to in loud settings, has been capped at three hours of use per month for anyone who doesn't pay for Meta One Premium. Meta confirmed the change on a support page this week, which also notes that a subscription is not required to use the AI glasses in general.

OASIS Smart ring Featured on hand

For decades, we've interacted with computers using keyboards, mice, and touchscreens. OASIS thinks it's time for something different. The startup has unveiled the OASIS 1, a smart ring designed for private AI dictation, letting users whisper naturally while a built-in microphone transcribes their words. And when the AI inevitably gets something wrong? There's a tiny trackpad built into the ring to fix it.
