Oscars hashtag-activated emoji now on Twitter and Periscope

The Oscars are almost upon us. With just days till the live broadcast, Twitter has unveiled its official emoji for the occasion.

In anticipation of more live video reactions to the event, this time around both Twitter and Periscope will get their own custom emoji activated by the #Oscars hashtag. Twitter users who use the custom hashtag will see a golden statue (much like Oscar himself) appear next to it in their tweets.

Meanwhile, Periscope users can type both #Oscars and #onetake in order to convert one of every five hearts into a tub of popcorn emoji. For some visual inspiration, Periscope is encouraging people to re-enact scenes from this year’s Best Picture nominees, reports Ad Week. The Twitter-owned live streaming app will likely also be used by reporters and celebs, both from the red carpet and during the ceremony — although it will face fierce competition from the likes of Snapchat and Facebook.

Twitter has also revealed the most talked about Oscars contenders on its platform. The results, which may give an insight into potential winners on the night, can be arranged by state within the U.S. Overall, however, the most talked about film (by a landslide) is Mad Max: Fury Road. The result for most discussed actor is almost unanimously in Leonardo DiCaprio’s favor. Jennifer Lawrence takes the Twitter crown for best actress, as does Kate Winslet for best supporting actress. Rounding out the categories, the most chattered about best supporting actor is Mark Ruffalo and Pixar’s Inside Out is the most collectively discussed animated film. You can check out the results for yourself in the interactive Twitter chart below.

The Oscars will hit our screens on Sunday February 28 at 8:30 pm ET. And you can get official behind-the-scenes access to the event on Twitter by following The Academy’s official account, which will be using a Twitter Mirror with GIF functionality during the ceremony.
