When the Beatles called it quits, Paul McCartney kept on writing and playing. The results of his efforts, hits which span multiple genres, collaborators, and decades, will now be assembled into one package: A new 67-song compilation called Pure McCartney.
McCartney, who mainly played bass and sang in the iconic British rock group, made his first solo recording in 1970 with McCartney and continued working throughout the years, with his most recent album New having been released in 2013. The compilation will feature hits from throughout his entire time as a solo artist and in his band Wings. The most recent song included in the compilation is his Say Say Say Remix from 2015, though the original song was released in 1983.
McCartney says the 67-song release was created not because he wants fans to take a more critical look at all of his post-Beatles output, but rather because he wanted to give them something to enjoy, taking a long walk through McCartney’s nostalgic and colorful career after the Fab Four.
“Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to,” McCartney said in a statement about the project. “Maybe it’s to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home or at a party with friends? So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse playlists from various periods of my long and winding career.”
More than forty of the songs picked for Pure McCartney made it to Billboard’s top 40 charts when they were initially released, and the compilation features classics such as Maybe I’m Amazed and Band on The Run alongside newer, lesser-known songs.
The new compilation will be available in two or four-CD versions, as well as on a four-LP package. Pure McCartney will hit shelves on June 10.
