Chance The Rapper — No Problem (feat. Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz)
One of the most surprising (and successful) collaborations to appear on Chance the Rapper’s new mixtape Coloring Book this week was No Problem, a trap-influenced cut which featured verses from Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz. Anthemic for its entire five minute run, the track is a hype builder for the summer, the sort of song you put on just before heading to a massive party. It’s an unusual direction for Chance, who has a penchant for more gentle rap cuts, but in this case we aren’t complaining.
The Stone Roses — All For One
The first new material from famed British rockers The Stone Roses in two decades, All For One made massive waves when it landed on the internet earlier this week. It’s a track which showcases everything fans have always loved about the ’90s rockers: A driving beat, mellow vocal stylings, and excellent tones all around. Given how good this single is (its lacking in the lyrics department notwithstanding), we can’t wait to hear other new material from the band, who have reportedly been holed up in the studio for some time.
Nick Leng — Drivers
Drivers is an interesting bit of pop music which mixes contemporary electronic beats with warm vintage tones to create an extremely pleasant anthem. Created by 22-year-old Los Angeles resident Nick Leng, who spent his youth in South Africa, the song has an international mystique; It’s the kind of thing you could easily convince someone was made for a European dance hall, rather than a hipster bar in Silver Lake.
Sick Sad World — Skateboarding Girl
Garage-y beach pop may be a slowly-receding trend in the music world these days, but every once in awhile a track like Skateboarding Girl comes along to convince us that the genre shouldn’t disappear so quickly. A hip little good-time jam, this sneak attack proves why creators Sick Sad World deserve every drop of hype they have earned so far — and maybe a good bit more. Put it on, fire up the grill, and pop a tall boy: Summer is (almost) here.
Steve Gunn — Ancient Jules
There’s some definite Paul McCartney influence in the latest single from British songwriter Steve Gunn, and we sure aren’t complaining. A steady-trucking new single which is perfectly suited to a back road drive, Ancient Jules sounds classic and warm, feeling as though Gunn took a time machine to the Wings era. It’s a modern classic of the highest order, the sort of gem which doesn’t surface on streaming-era speakers nearly as often as it should.
