Orbii home security system uses a robotic device to monitor your home

Sometimes, less is more. Installing a home security system doesn’t have to mean placing multiple devices in rooms throughout your home. As DIY systems evolve, there is no reason why your home security system should stay in one place. The game is changing, and that means we now have home security devices that can cruise around our homes, like Orbii, a mobile-controlled robotic device.

Shaped like a ball, Orbii rolls from room to room, allowing you to check up on any developments, whether that be the mischief your pet is getting into or graver security concerns. The robotic device contains an HD camera, microphone, and speaker, enabling it to alert you to any issues as it investigates its surroundings. You can also control Orbii manually and direct it to specific locations.

Orbii connects to your Wi-Fi network and can both stream and store video footage. The device has onboard memory, and footage can also be stored to a secure cloud server. The HD camera, which works even in low-light situations, captures 90-degree views, while the device itself has a 360-degree range of motion.

Orbii maps out the layout of your home over time so that it can freely and efficiently patrol the space. With its mobility, the device is intended to be more affordable than other systems, saving consumers from having to buy multiple monitoring devices. At this point, however, the company still sees Orbii as serving as a security supplement.

Made from high-density polycarbonate, Orbii is wear-resistant and durable, which is good considering that pets may be tempted to gnaw on it. The device is also resistant to small shocks and can even be used outdoors. Indoor use, however, is currently recommended.

Thanks to a new Indiegogo campaign, Orbii is now available at an early bird price of $139.

When it comes to robot vacuums and mops, most models employ one of two methods to clean your floors -- a vibrating mop plate or spinning mop pads. Eureka is doing things a bit differently this year, as the team revealed the J20 Robotic Vacuum and Floor Washer at CES 2024, which uses an innovative new belt mop design.

The so-called RollRenew mopping system features a cycling belt mop, a dual water tank, and five water nozzles. As the robot rolls its mop across your floors, the nozzles will continuously spray water, cleaning up stains and soaking up spills. The dirty portion of the mop is then cleaned by a scraper located under the robot, forcing the dirty water into a wastewater reservoir.

Segway expands its smart home footprint with robot lawn mowers at CES 2024

Segway -- the company responsible for Paul Blart's preferred mode of transportation -- already has a surprisingly robust smart home lineup. The company expanded its catalog at CES 2024, revealing a new series of robot lawn mowers (Navimow i Series) and a new portable power station (Segway Cube Series).

The upcoming Navimow i Series makes a few big improvements over Segway's existing H Series. Along with the ability to work without wires (which are typically used to set boundaries for the robot), the i Series employs a technology known as the Exact Fusion Locating System (EFLS). Segway says this will let the robot lawn mower better track its location and ensure it's cutting your lawn as close to specifications as possible.

Eufy is a big name in the smart home space, and it had plenty of cool gadgets to show off at CES 2024. Along with giving consumers a closer look at four recently launched security cameras, Eufy revealed the X10 Pro Omni robot vacuum and mop, which looks to be an affordable alternative to flagships from Roborock and Ecovacs.

The X10 Pro Omni doesn't make any huge innovations in the world of robot vacuums. Most of its features we've already seen on other robots, such as its ability to empty its dustbin, clean its mop, then dry it to prevent the accumulation of mildew. It also boasts an avoidance system to ensure it's not bumping into any shoes, toys, or other items that have accidentally been left in its path. And while its 8,000 Pa of suction is impressive, it's a number a handful of other robots have already hit.
