Leaked retailer image could be our first look at the Nvidia GTX 1060

While the Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 are exciting, powerful cards, there are few people out there who have the kind of money to spend on that sort of hardware. In reality, Nvidia fans will need to wait for something like the GTX 1060, which we may have our first look at thanks to a snapshot uploaded to Reddit.

With the AMD RX 480 coming in at such an impressive price point, with decent power for most gamers, Nvidia will need to work hard to be competitive at the mid-range this generation, so the GTX 1060 is an important card despite likely being far less powerful than its bigger brothers.

From the image which surfaced on Reddit earlier today, the card looks very similar to the GTX 1080 and 1070 Founders Edition cards, with the same silver and black shroud and the name of the card emblazoned at the bracket end.

Although we don’t have a great shot of it, the connectors look to include a DVI-D port, with the layout looking much the same as the other Pascal cards. TechPowerUp notes that the card itself appears to be shorter than the cooler, much like the RX 480, and some previous Nvidia mid-range entries.

We don’t exactly know where this card or picture of it came from. You could suggest that because of the Capital Compute Center bag under it, that that’s where it originated. Although that is possible, the company hasn’t said much. Its only response is a Facebook post — of a laughing emoji.

Considering the RX 480 from AMD debuts on June 29 at a competitive price point, we wouldn’t be surprised if Nvidia announced the GTX 1060 soon. Here’s hoping its production is ramped up for the more mid-range card, so that it can adequately compete. If stock issues persist for the new Pascal cards, Nvidia could have a tough fight on its hands over the next few months.

The price of performance
Nvidia really didn't hold back in the RTX 40 series. It introduced some of the best graphics cards we've seen in a while, but raw performance isn't the only thing to consider when estimating the value of a GPU. The price is the second major factor and weighing it against performance can often tip the scales from "great" to "disappointing." That was the case with several GPUs in the Ada generation.

CableMod’s adapters damaged up to $74K worth of Nvidia GPUs

CableMod's adapters were meant to fix the problem of melting connectors on Nvidia's top GPU, the RTX 4090, but it appears that things didn't go as planned. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a notice that the CableMod 12VHPWR angled adapters are being recalled due to fire and burn hazards. More than 25,300 adapters are to be returned, and the affected customers are eligible for a full refund.

The connectors on the RTX 4090 have been melting ever since the GPU hit the shelves in late 2022, and so far, the only fix seems to lie in careful installation and picking the right PC case that can accommodate this monstrous card. CableMod's angled adapters showed a lot of promise, at least initially. Seeing as bending the cable can contribute to the overheating, an angled adapter should have been just the fix -- but unfortunately, the melting continued, even with the use of CableMod's solution.

Nvidia's GTX 1650 is nothing short of a legendary graphics card. The humble, budget-focused GPU has achieved a massive status among PC gamers, sitting at the top of the Steam hardware survey for years. It's taken a back seat to Nvidia's newer RTX 3060 in recent months, but it's still owned by around 4% to 5% of gamers who take part in the Steam hardware survey.

It's starting to age out of relevance, however. The GTX 1650 is four years old, and it's struggling to keep up with modern games like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
