The British automaker is launching five new Design Editions of the 570S, its “entry-level” model. Each version features different combinations of paint colors, interior trim, and other items from McLaren’s vast catalog of personalization options, hand picked by the company’s own designers. If nothing else, this should help create cars that are appealing to look at, as well as distinctive.
For each Design Edition, McLaren designers selected an exterior color, wheel style and finish, exhaust style, brake caliper color, and one of the automaker’s “By McLaren” interior design packages. Like interior designers decorating a house, the McLaren designers’ goal was to pick different elements that would work well together visually.
The Design Edition 1 (pictured above) is painted Vermillion Red, with five-spoke wheels that have a diamond-cut finish, Stealth exhaust, and red brake calipers. The interior is trimmed in Carbon Black Alcantara with Apex Red and Jet Black Nappa leather, and Slate Grey contrast stitching. McLaren will also let customers make some choices when it comes to interior trim, such as whether to add carbon fiber trim pieces.
McLaren did not make any mechanical changes to the Design Editions, so buyers get the same 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as the standard 570S. The V8 produces 562 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, getting the 570S to 62 mph from a standstill in 3.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 204 mph, according to McLaren.
In a somewhat odd statement for a supercar with a six-figure price tag, McLaren is pitching the Design Editions as a good value. It claims the $10,320 price of the package (on top of the roughly $185,000 base price of a 570S) is significantly less expensive than ordering all of the options it includes individually. McLaren is taking orders for the five Design Editions now, with deliveries expected to begin next year.
