To kick off this year’s CES, Philips has announced the debut of its new 34-inch Brilliance Curved UltraWide LCD desktop display. The monitor features a resolution of 3,440 x 1,440, which is nearly two-and-a-half times what you would get on a standard 1080p display.

Response times will measure up to 14 milliseconds in the monitor’s standard mode, but that number drops dramatically with SmartResponse turned on, all the way down to a mere five milliseconds. That makes it one of the fastest curved displays we’ve seen yet, so this Philips could be a staple in the stable of any gamer who wants the fully immersive experience these screens provide.

Philips’ MultiView tech makes it easy to multitask when you’re at work, letting users connect two devices to the same screen and seamlessly switch between each on the fly. Users can connect via one DisplayPort 1.2, one HDMI 1.4 (w/MHL), one regular HDMI 1.4, one HDMI 2.0, and four USB 3.0 ports.

The company promises the panel can reproduce over 1 billion colors and says it will hit a respectable 1000:1 contrast ratio. Philips says the Brilliance LCD will come equipped with a high-quality pair of seven watt DTS speakers for the ultimate multimedia experience, as well as an audio in/headphone out jack for all your personal listening needs.

There’s no solid word on when we can look forward to with retail availability just yet.

A new standard is raising the bar for HDR on PC
Cyberpunk 2077 running on the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8.

HDR is about to get a big upgrade on PC. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), the nonprofit group behind standards like DisplayPort and Adaptive Sync, is releasing a new specification for its DisplayHDR standard. DisplayHDR 1.2 not only introduces several new tests for validation, but it also raises the baseline requirements for monitors to earn the coveted badge.

Nearly every aspect of the certification has been tweaked, and several new tests are now a part of the process. VESA tells me this change is meant to reflect where displays are in 2024. DisplayHDR was first introduced seven years ago, and the price of monitors with the badge has more than halved during that time. DisplayHDR 1.2 raises the bar.

The Hyte Y40 PC case sitting on a table.

We already know Nvidia is working on its RTX 50-series graphics cards, code-named Blackwell, but the rollout may not go as expected.

According to well-known hardware leaker kopite7kimi, Nvidia plans to launch the RTX 5080 before it launches the RTX 5090. That may not sound like a big deal, but it's a change of pace compared to what we saw in the last generation.
