Baseball! Apocalypse! Prison! Here are October’s Games With Gold for the Xbox

It may only be September 21, but Microsoft has already revealed the free games Xbox Live Gold members will be receiving in October through the Games With Gold program. Whether you like baseball, extreme sports, or surviving alone in the apocalypse, next month has got you covered.

Starting October 1 and running until the end of the month, Xbox One owners will be able to grab Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings for free. With no realistic simulator to play on the Xbox One, this is the best option for baseball fans. It has been met with fairly positive reviews, with particular praise directed at its pick-up-and-play style of gameplay. The game launched on the Xbox One last year after about nine months of PlayStation exclusivity.

From October 16 until November 15, Xbox One players will also be able to pick up The Escapists, a stealth- and strategy-filled adventure about an inmate yearning to once again see the outside world. The game is also available on Xbox 360, as well as PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, and Linux.

For the first half of October, MX vs. ATV Reflex will be available free of charge for the Xbox 360. It will be followed by Ubisoft’s I Am Alive from October 16 until the end of the month. The latter game takes place in a desolate post-apocalyptic world, and features survival mechanics we haven’t seen in too many games, including the ability to “hold up” enemies, even if your gun has no ammunition. Its drab, gray color scheme and foggy skies perfectly capture the essence of a dead planet. As with all recent Xbox 360 Games With Gold offerings, both MX vs. ATV Reflex and I Am Alive will also be playable on Xbox One.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (March 28-30)
A man stands on a rock in Atomfall.

Xbox isn't letting March run out without giving Game Pass subscribers one last batch of titles fresh to the service. April will be a huge month for upcoming Xbox Series X games, kicking things off with South of Midnight early and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 both arriving on Game Pass day one. But before we get too caught up in the future, let's focus on the here and now. We have one big day one addition that will be of interest to Fallout fans, plus two other games arriving in Core that everyone should play. Don't let this weekend go to waste and check out these Game Pass hits.

Atomfall has more differences to a Fallout game than it might look, but bugs aren't one of them. That's an annoyance for certain, but not enough to pass on the entire experience. You are let loose in a quarantine zone in an alternate history version of 1957 where the real-life Windscale fire was far worse than it was in reality. This game is brutal in almost every way, but also incredibly flexible. Quests are referred to as Investigations, meaning you have to do a lot of the legwork figuring out where to go and how you want to solve them. It has moments of brilliance with its almost immersive sim-like design, but don't expect a polished shooter or RPG.

Microsoft makes it easier to switch between some games on Xbox Cloud Gaming
A woman holding a remote while looking at an Amazon Fire TV with the Xbox app on it. It's on the Cloud Gaming menu with Fallout 76, Senua's Saga Hellblade 2 and more on it.

Microsoft has just unveiled a bunch of gaming-related updates, and while they seem like rather small tweaks, they could be helpful for Xbox gamers who don't play on the actual console. The TL;DR includes a cleaner Game Bar UI, Game Pass benefits, and a way to seamlessly shift in and out of games using Xbox Cloud Gaming. Let's dig in.

First, perhaps my favorite of all the announcements: Microsoft has made it easier to switch from one game to another in Xbox Cloud Gaming. Unfortunately, this only concerns Assassin's Creed games so far, such as Assassin's Creed Shadows -- but it's still pretty cool.

3 new Xbox Game Pass games to play this weekend (March 21-23)
Key art for 33 Immortals

A lot of us will have our hands full this weekend playing Assassin's Creed Shadows, but Ubisoft's latest open-world adventure may not be to everyone's tastes. Fans of Fallout might have their eye on the upcoming Xbox Series X game Atomfall, which is also coming to Game Pass on release, but that still leaves an entire weekend with nothing to play. Or, it would if there wasn't a nice selection of new titles added to the service ready for you to dive into. This weekend has something for everyone, such as a brand new Roguelike co-op game, a non-violent adventure game staring Greek gods, and a hardcore JRPG. Let's not waste any more time and give you the rundown on the best new Xbox Game Pass games worth playing this weekend.
33 Immortals
33 Immortals - Official Launch Trailer

This day one addition is still technically in early access, but we already love what 33 Immortals is doing. This is one of the most creative co-op games yet, with 33 players all working together in a massive raid-like dungeon. 33 players might sound like a lot, but the game is built on your team working in groups to tackle different corners of the map as smaller squads. Each game is randomized to an extent, but the goal is to always complete various challenges and unlock the route to the boss. That boss is no joke, and keeping yourself and as many allies alive until the end is key to taking it down. There's still a lot to be added and polished, but 33 Immortals is shaping up to be another potential co-op darling.
