Sony Ships Gangs of London for PSP

Folks who think the PSP mainly appeals to the sort of gamer who isn’t old enough o have a driver’s license may be surprised to learn that the Playstation mothership itself, Sony Computer Entertainment, has just shipped Gangs of London for its Playstation Portable in North America.

"Gangs of London is varied, quick-fire, and fun with all original content designed exclusively for the PSP system. Now you can control and give orders to your team of gangsters to orchestrate the most ruthless takeover of the London underworld," said Daniel Navarro, London Studio, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "We are excited by its innovative combination of the squad-based and driving genres rooted in an intense depiction of London’s criminal underworld."

Gangs of London presents more than 60 graphic-novel style stories involving present-day London’s criminal underworld spread across five modes: Story Mode, Gang Battle, Free Roaming, London Pub Games, and a unique Game Sharing mode, which generates a new level unique to each PSP with content depending on the serial number of the target system, throwing players into unique missions with varying objectives, characters, weapons, and environments.

In Story Mode, players lead a gang through narrative stories in a struggle to become London’s top gangster, and stories can be replayed from the perspective of different gangs. Gang Battle mode combines turn-based strategy with card games where up to five players set defend and expand their territories in London. Free Roaming modes (seven of them) enable players to explore 25 square miles of London in different situations; one Tourist Mode challenges players to photograph the city’s famous landmarks to unlock game extras.

Gangs of London is rated M for Mature by the ESRB; retail prices for the game should land around $40.

Hideo Kojima partners with Sony on a return to the stealth action genre
Hideo Kojima 2024 January State of Play in front of Kojima Productions banner

Kojima Productions has a new stealth action game coming after the long-awaited Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. At the latest PlayStation State of Play, Kojima revealed that his studio will work with Sony to produce a new, original IP in the form of a "next-generation action espionage" game. He now has a total of three AAA games in the works, including OD.

While Kojima didn't reveal anything specific about the game, he claimed that he was confident the title would be the "culmination" of his work. He described it as an interactive title that would also be a movie, aligning with his well-documented interest in film and production. It's unclear if this means that the project is both a game and a movie, or a game that is like a movie.

Sony’s latest partnership is a big move for PlayStation’s mobile future
A PS5 sits on a table.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed its next big gaming partnership, and it's with a somewhat unexpected company. The game developer and publisher in question is NCSoft, a Korean company best known for its work on MMO series, namely Guild Wars and Lineage.

According to a press release, the two companies have entered into a partnership that enables them to "collaborate in various global business fields, including mobile." We asked Sony if the phrasing of "various global business fields" also applied to console games, but a representative for the company said it doesn't have anything else to share on that front currently.

This hidden gem is the perfect game for your Thanksgiving day relaxation
play loddlenaut this thanksgiving loddles

In such a fantastic year for video games, plenty of titles go under the radar. Those games become hidden gems, and this month, Loddlenaut is one of the best ones you can find. It launched on November 16 to little fanfare, and that’s a shame. I enjoyed its Steam Next Fest demo a couple of months ago, and having now played the following game following its launch, it has become one of my favorite indies of the year.

In Loddlenaut, players control an interstellar janitor who comes to the ocean planet of GUP-14 to clean up all of the trash and gunk left behind by their employer, the GUPPI corporation. It’s a simple game about cleaning and being conscious of the mess you leave behind, and Moon Lagoon finds a surprisingly gratifying gameplay loop to reinforce that premise and theme. As a laid-back game that is as enjoyable to play via Steam Link or Steam Deck as it is on a PC, Loddlenaut is an indie hidden gem to check out over the holidays.
Cleaning up the mess you made
After arriving on GUP-14, I slowly but surely had to help the natural flora and fauna-- whether that was fruit-baring plants of the aquatic Loddle animals that are the game’s namesake -- take back this planet by cleaning up toxic goop and picking up trash sullying the beautiful landscape. Loddlenaut’s retro 3D art style is a perfect fit for this setup, as the minimalist detail of each object always makes it clear which things are toxic and foreign and need to be removed, even from a distance. And once all the gunk is cleared away, Loddlenaut can be quite a beautiful game.
