Sony Ericsson Jalou The clamshell fashion phone lives on. Though the Motorola Razr has seen its sun set, and the Lindsay Lohans of the world have all switched to the iPhone, Sony Ericsson has just the fix for Razr mourners looking for a waif little phone with a bit more style.

The company’s upcoming Jalou handset will actually don Dolce & Gabbana badges as an indicator of its fashionable aspirations, which permeate every aspect of its design. The outside takes on the shape of a gem, from the rigid 45-degree angles in the face to the color choices (Deep Amethyst, Aquamarine Blue and Onyx Black) and gold accents around the edges.

Inside, the diamond-cut design continues to the number pad, which consists of squared-off gold buttons below a sharply segmented hexagonal control pad. In a not-so-subtle nod to vanity, the 2-inch screen above even turns into a mirror when turned off.

Though it’s no smartphone, Sony Ericsson has managed to pack some interesting tech into the Jalou, including a pedometer to track just how owners walk (or manage to hobble in heels) every day. It also includes a 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo FM radio, 3G Web connectivity, and all the usuals like Bluetooth 2.0 and messaging capabilities.
The Jalou will go on sale in the fourth quarter, but pricing has not yet been announced. More information is available at Sony Ericsson.

The Xperia 5 IV shows Sony isn’t done making small phones

Sony today debuted at IFA 2022 the Xperia 5 IV, a new compact smartphone. Like all of Sony's smartphones, the company highlights its camera capabilities with a laser-sharp focus on its videography features. It goes on sale in Europe and the U.S. at the end of September and October respectively.

The Xperia 5 IV ships with a compact 6.1-inch OLED display capable of a 120HZ refresh for smooth scrolling and 240Hz Motion blur reduction for gaming. Sony says this is its brightest Full HD display yet and up to 50% brighter than the Xperia 5 III. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack that supports high-quality audio, as well as the newest Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) Audio standard, though that will come in a future update.

Sony is working on a new smartphone camera sensor called the IMX989 that has a massive 1-inch sensor profile. The official Weibo handle of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has confirmed that the upcoming 12S Ultra slated to debut on July 4 will come armed with Sony’s massive phone camera sensor.

Sony’s new Xperia 1 IV comes with a crazy moving zoom lens

Sony just announced its Xperia 1 IV, an Android flagship with a twist. The company is equipping this new phone with the first true optical zoom lens on mobile. This means that when it comes to capturing realistic portrait shots, faraway images, and true bokeh, the Xperia 1 IV should have an advantage over other phones on a pure hardware basis. With the company's elegant Xperia design language as well as powerful internals, the Xperia is an attractive phone except for the price.

At Sony, we believe creativity has no limits and our new flagship model, the Xperia 1 IV, is born of that philosophy,” Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. said in a release. “Xperia empowers users to become creators, and every facet of content creation can be handled by Xperia 1 IV.”
