The Surprisingly Simple Secret Behind the T707’s Gesture Controls

The Surprisingly Simple Secret Behind the T707

After hearing that you could actually silence rings from Sony-Ericsson’s new T707 fashion phone with a simple wave of the hand over the phone, we were a little bit surprised to hear that the company was building such innovative new technology into a phone built primarily for looks. As it turns out, there’s not much to it.

According to a Sony-Ericsson rep, the hovering tech is a simple feat of optical recognition, using the already-built-in camera. When the phone rings, it automatically turns on the camera, which, if you’ve set it down on the table properly, is facing up. Code within the phone simply looks for a hand waving, and it triggers the ring to mute.

Of course, that’s all fine and well in theory, but can the phone actually pull it off? We wouldn’t know. After asking for demos from Sony-Ericsson at two different events, we were shut down both times: once because reps couldn’t figure out how to trigger a ring for us, and once because the models on hand were not even fully functional. And of course, if you don’t set your phone down with the camera facing up, you’re also out of luck.

Regardless of whether the tech works, we can testify that this is indeed one very fashionable looking phone, from very exotic-looking and glossy exterior design to the metal-trimmed buttons inside.

Things still aren’t looking good for Apple’s iOS 19 update
iPhone 16 Pro Max in Desert Titanium.

The latest version of iOS 18.2 rolled out to (most) iPhone users yesterday, and it brought with it a slew of new features that fans have eagerly waited for. These include Visual Intelligence for iPhone 16, Genmoji, and Image Playground. However, this slower rollout of iOS 18 features is having an impact on development times for its next iteration, and that means iOS 19 might be delayed.

There have been whispers of delays before, so this doesn't come as a huge surprise — particularly when you think about how the production flow at Apple usually goes. In a Threads post, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said: "I continue to hear that the gradual rollout of features across iOS 18 to iOS 18.4 is leading to delays of some features scheduled for iOS 19. That will lead to a long-term rollout of features next cycle as well. Engineers are stuck working on iOS 18 projects when they’d usually already be on to the following OS."

The Red Magic 10 Pro is 2024’s best smartphone deal you haven’t heard of
Side frontal view of Red Magic 10 Pro.

I often question what exactly is a flagship phone. Some would argue that a top-tier silicon is the first requisite. Others go for a more holistic approach that involves a fast screen and big camera sensors.

The boundaries, however, vary wildly, depending on the brand you’re chasing. Then there are mavericks like Red Magic, which play in the outlier category of “gaming phones.”

Samsung Galaxy S25 FE could serve a double whammy of big surprises
samsung galaxy s24 fe review 13

Samsung introduced its latest Fan Edition phone, the Galaxy S24 FE, barely a few weeks ago. But it seems the company already has some radical plans chalked out for its successor early next year.

Citing supply chain reports, Korean outlet The Elec reports that the Galaxy S25 FE will retain the 6.7-inch format, mirroring the supersized approach taken by the Galaxy S24 FE. The increase in display size this year has been a bit divisive, but it seems some interesting changes are due in 2025.
