Sting — I Can’t Stop Thinking About You

The first pop song in 13 years to emerge from the increasingly world music-loving Sting, I Can’t Stop Thinking About You is just about as classic a return to form as you could ask for. It’s a steady-rocking single which showcases the hooky style that made the bassist famous in the first place, and finds itself among the cleanest singles he has delivered to the public’s ears in recent memory.

Bon Iver — 33 “God”

Bon Iver - 33 "GOD" - Official Lyric Video

Justin Vernon’s layered falsetto style hasn’t shifted too much since Bon Iver broke through into the mainstream with For Emma, Forever Ago nearly a decade back, but — probably thanks to high-profile work with hip-hop artists like Kanye West — the band’s music has gotten significantly more beat-oriented. 33 “God”, the latest single from upcoming release 22, A Million is expansive and groove-oriented, an almost-orchestral work with no shortage of sonic curiosities for your ears to latch on to.

Big Thief — Masterpiece and More

Among the most brilliant songwriting duos to emerge from New York in the past decade, Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek’s project Big Thief appeared at NPR’s Tiny Desk this week, bringing with them songs from their debut record Masterpiece, which came out earlier this summer. It’s an enthralling though brief live set, compelling from the first note to the last.

Sampha — Blood On Me

The latest single from Kanye West and Frank Ocean collaborator Sampha feels like it was bred for the next James Bond soundtrack. Lyrics are fraught with paranoia and placed over a seriously dark and groovy beat, allowing the singer to showcase his chops outside of his typically gentler style. The track demonstrates the sonic depth that drew such big-name cohorts to Sampha’s doorstep in the first place.

Ultimate Painting — Song For Brian Jones

Ultimate Painting "Song For Brian Jones" (Official Video)

Known throughout the music world for their mellow, post-Velvet Underground songwriting style, British rock band Ultimate Painting returned with a new music video this week, highlighting the juxtaposition between the great outdoors and the city loft in which their music is actually recorded. Song For Brian Jones is one that meanders into your day-end playlist, the onward push you need after time spent muddied in work’s trenches.

If you're a die-hard music fan, you probably keep a curated library of playlists packed with your favorite artists and albums on Spotify, Apple Music, or whatever your favorite music streaming app is. But how do you discover the best indie artists today? Some music-streaming platforms are better than others at celebrating the ‘unsung gem’ acts, but one of the most reliable forums for new, off-the-grid tunes is SoundCloud.

Two kids using the Puro Sound PuroQuiet Plus to watch something on a tablet.

Kid-friendly consumer tech is all the rage these days, so it’s no surprise that there’s an entire market of headphones designed exclusively for young ones. But when we think “kid-friendly,” sometimes we imagine products that are built to be a bit more throwaway than their adult counterparts. That’s not the case with the products on our list of the best headphones for kids, though.

We want our child-tailored headphones to include parental-controlled volume limiters, to ensure our children aren’t harming their eardrums. Pretty much every entry on our list checks this vital box, but we also wanted to point you and yours toward products that offer exceptional noise-canceling, built-in mics for phone and video calls, and long-lasting batteries for schooldays or a long flight.

How to master your equalizer settings for the perfect sound
An equalizer from eqMac.

While most people will simply flip on the radio or load up Spotify to listen to music, audiophiles like to dig a bit deeper and customize their experience. This often comes in the form of adjustments to the equalizer, which offers the freedom to tweak every aspect of the sound booming out of headphones or speakers. Even some streaming services now have built-in EQs, giving you more ways than ever to play with your music and find something that best fits your ears.

Tinkering with the equalizer can be daunting to newcomers, as there are tons of cryptic settings you can manipulate. And if you mess with the wrong one, your sound quality might take a nasty hit. Thankfully, learning the basics isn't too difficult.
