Wilco — Locator

Wilco - Locator

The first new single in 12 months from cult-beloved alt-country band Wilco, Locator was released this week as a free download to fans in celebration of the one year anniversary of the band’s ninth studio album, Star Wars. A rambling roots rocker that is rhythmically disparate throughout its two-and-a-half-minute run time, the song is classic Wilco — right down to the harmonized vocals on the chorus, and the fast end-tune fade.

Jamie Lidell — Walk Right Back

Jamie Lidell - Walk Right Back (Lyric Video)

The first bars of pop singer Jamie Lidell’s latest cut Walk Right Back grabs you by the back of your neck, jolting your senses with its catchy, inspirational beat. Balancing itself right in the sweet spot between a beat-tape head bopper and a Z100 single, the song comes off as something Michael Jackson might have released if he was bursting onto the scene in 2016. Everyone knows the world needs more enticing beat-breaks to be followed by clear, effective pop choruses, but there’s a shortage of musicians who are actually able to give the people what they want.

Jones — Melt

An acoustic version of British soul singer Jones’ latest single Melt popped up online this week, offering fans an awesomely stripped-down single to chew on. The fully produced version is still great, but there’s something about how the electric guitar plays with her mellow, reverb vocals that makes this one feel more special — a masterclass in classy, late-night jams.

Beach Baby — U R

Beach Baby - U R

New Wave Londoners Beach Baby put out their latest Summer-themed single this week, complete with a five-part music video documenting “The Five Stages of Break-Up Grief” via a character named Lily. Anthemic and compelling — even without the extremely well-shot video — the new single is exactly the kind of thing you’ll want to pop on before a casual weekend jog.

Big Thief with Luke Temple — Mother

Big Thief w. Luke Temple - Mother | Shaking Through (Music Video)

The best songwriters never rest, and such is the case with up-and-coming Brooklyn band Big Thief. Having released the intimate and near-perfect debut album Masterpiece earlier this summer, the band shared a new collaboration with songwriter Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic) this week, an extended jam called Mother which comes complete with mid-song break down. Produced as part of Philadelphia-based Weathervane Music’s non-profit mission to show bands’ creative processes, the song was released alongside a documentary following the day the band spent in the studio.

Soundcloud Interface on a Macbook.

If you’re a huge music fan, you’ve probably combed through the many playlists, artists, and albums of your Spotify or Apple Music subscription. But what about all the indie artists of the world? Some music-streaming platforms are better than others at celebrating the
‘unsung gem’ acts, but one of the most reliable forums for new, off-the-grid tunes is SoundCloud.

Founded in 2007, SoundCloud has always prioritized music that’s a bit under the radar. With over 320 million tracks in its library, the platform will even let you download a majority of its songs and albums.

Two kids using the Puro Sound PuroQuiet Plus to watch something on a tablet.

Kid-friendly consumer tech is all the rage these days, so it’s no surprise that there’s an entire market of headphones designed exclusively for young ones. But when we think “kid-friendly,” sometimes we imagine products that are built to be a bit more throwaway than their adult counterparts. That’s not the case with the products on our list of the best headphones for kids, though.

We want our child-tailored headphones to include parental-controlled volume limiters, to ensure our children aren’t harming their eardrums. Pretty much every entry on our list checks this vital box, but we also wanted to point you and yours toward products that offer exceptional noise-canceling, built-in mics for phone and video calls, and long-lasting batteries for schooldays or a long flight.

How to master your equalizer settings for the perfect sound
An equalizer from eqMac.

While most people will simply flip on the radio or load up Spotify to listen to music, audiophiles like to dig a bit deeper and customize their experience. This often comes in the form of adjustments to the equalizer, which offers the freedom to tweak every aspect of the sound booming out of headphones or speakers. Even some streaming services now have built-in EQs, giving you more ways than ever to play with your music and find something that best fits your ears.

Tinkering with the equalizer can be daunting to newcomers, as there are tons of cryptic settings you can manipulate. And if you mess with the wrong one, your sound quality might take a nasty hit. Thankfully, learning the basics isn't too difficult.
