This company’s covering all the bases, launches Android and Windows phones, plus Windows tablets

Kazam, an up and coming European smartphone brand, has announced a series of six new Android smartphones, a trio of Windows-based tablets, and two Windows Phone smartphones. Although the new hardware has been introduced now, the range will make its official debut at Mobile World Congress next week.

What do we have? Starting with the Android hardware, Kazam has introduced the Trooper 445L and a selection of other devices all based around the same design and spec sheet. It has a 4.5-inch, 480 x 800 pixel screen, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front camera, and a MediaTek quad-core processor. Android 4.4 is installed, and the phone has 4G LTE connectivity.

Kazam wants to ensure everyone can find the right mid-spec phone for them, so it has added a wide variety of subtly different alternatives to the Trooper range. The Trooper 440L has the same processor, but a smaller 4-inch, 480 x 800 pixel screen. The Trooper 450 has a 5-inch, 480 x 854 pixel screen, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, while the Trooper 451 has a Spreadtrum processor inside. Finally, the Trooper 455 takes the screen size to 5.5-inches.

Interestingly, all Kazam Android phones come with a three year warranty, and a year’s worth of free screen protection, meaning the company will replace it if it cracks.

Kazam gets closer to Microsoft

Moving on to Kazam’s Windows Phones, the spec sheets get slightly more interesting. The Thunder 450W runs Windows Phone 8.1, and is powered by a Snapdragon 200 processor, which drives a 720p 5-inch display. The rear camera has 8-megapixels, and there’s a 2-megapixel cam above the screen. Sadly, it’s only a 3G phone. That changes with the Thunder 450WL, which also has a Snapdragon 410 processor inside.

Finally, we come to Kazam’s first Windows tablets – the Kazam L7, L8, and L10. All are based on the Intel Bay Trail platform, and come with 720p screens, in either 7, 8, or 10.1 inch sizes. Windows 8.1 is installed, and other specs include 2-megapixel cameras on the front and rear, plus 32GB of internal storage space and a MicroSD card expansion slot. The L10 is the only one of the three to have 2GB of RAM, leaving the other two to muddle by with 1GB.

All Kazam’s new hardware will be shown at MWC, when prices and release dates will probably be confirmed.

Every time I switch from any Android phone to a Pixel, there's one small gesture missing that always annoys me. From a modern Galaxy phone or even a device from Xiaomi, I can double-tap an empty part of the home screen and immediately turn the display off. Samsung has offered a double-tap to turn off the screen since Android 11. On a Pixel, I still have to reach for the power button.

To be fair, Google isn't the only offender, and Motorola's stock Android phones, like the Razr Fold, also skip such a basic feature. But this might be changing soon. Android Authority has discovered updated code strings inside Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 pointing to Google’s long-in-development double-tap-to-sleep feature. Better still, Google appears to have expanded it beyond the lock screen and onto the home screen, which is exactly where I want it.
