We’ve built an awesome Steam Box. It’s small and efficient, yet has the grunt to offer awesome graphics in today’s most demanding games. The computer, which comes with Ubuntu 12.10 and Steam pre-installed, serves up a Core i3 processor and a Radeon HD 7770 graphics card. Yet we also managed to squeeze in a third-party CPU cooler and a reliable Antec power supply.

steambox23You can read how to build our Steam Box step-by-step for under $500, but if you’re feeling squeamish about rooting around in the guts of a PC – or lucky – you can enter to win our own. The system you’ll receive is the exact computer we constructed in our guide.

What do you have to do? Not much. Just leave a comment below with your guess about when Valve’s official Steam Box will be released and how much it will cost. We’ll pick a winner next weekend and announce the winner in the comments.

Only U.S. residents are eligible to win.

The Steam Deck OLED sitting in a case.

Valve took the world by storm when it revealed the Steam Deck in 2021, with the device going on to sell millions of units over the next few years. Things became even more exciting in 2023, when Valve launched the updated Steam Deck OLED -- fixing most of the original's issues while also bundling in a vibrant new display. Our Steam Deck OLED review found it to be more than just a minor update to the handheld PC, and it's arguably one of the best ways to game in 2024.

However, the original Steam Deck isn't obsolete just yet. Several models of the original Steam Deck are still up for purchase, and they're seeing nice price cuts as they slowly get phased out. But should you opt for the cheaper Steam Deck or the new Steam Deck OLED? And what exactly is the difference between these two models?

Asus ROG Ally vs. Steam Deck: here’s how they compare
Asus ROG Ally and Steam Deck sitting next to each other.

It's been nearly six months since I originally wrote my Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme review, and the device has changed drastically in that time. It's still a compelling device that easily beats the Steam Deck in raw performance, but a slew of strange updates has left the ROG Ally in a strange spot compared to the Steam Deck.

For those who don't have a handheld gaming PC, the ROG Ally still wins over the Steam Deck. However, as you can read in our Steam Deck review, Valve's handheld still continues to be a force in the evolving world of gaming handhelds despite its aging hardware.
It's all a matter of price
