iPhone 4 vs. Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) vs. Evo 4G

We pit Apple’s iPhone 4 against Samsung’s Captivate and HTC’s Evo 4G to see which smartphone delivers the best bang for $200.

The summer of the smartphone is upon us. With the arrival of a new messiah phone from Cupertino (Apple iPhone 4, $200 on AT&T), the very first 4G phone in the U.S. (HTC Evo 4G, $200 on Sprint), and the fastest Android device on the market (Samsung Captivate, $200 on AT&T), smartphone buyers have never faced a better slate of options – or a more confusing one.

While it’s tough to go wrong with any of these Herculean challengers, one must naturally reign supreme. We’ve pitted all three head-to-head in the most important feature categories to see which phone should call your pocket home.

Display

Winner: Apple iPhone 4

The screens on all three phones equate to big, bigger and biggest, with 3.5 inches on the iPhone, 4.0 on the Captivate and 4.3 on the Evo 4G. So how does the smallest one win?

It’s not all about diagonal span. Both the Evo 4G and Samsung Captivate offer fewer pixels (800 x 480) than the iPhone 4, which quadrupled pixels from the original iPhone to an unheard of 960 x 640. The Captivate also uses an OLED screen. While it looks more vibrant inside, it also washes out easily in the sun, and whites swing toward an unnatural blue. While the bigger size of the Evo 4G and Samsung Captivate might be superior for watching movies, we’re evaluating phones, not media players. The iPhone’s outdoor livability and ultra-sharp text – something you’ll be looking at a lot of – make it the most practical of the three.

Connectivity

Winner: Evo 4G

With both the Captivate and iPhone 4 sharing AT&T’s infamously hobbled 3G network, and the Evo wearing its first-4G-phone-in-America pin, this one’s a no-brainer. Besides the sheer speed, it’s also the only one that can double as a Wi-Fi router to share connectivity with other devices.

For what it’s worth, the second-place winner between the AT&T phones is just as easy to peg. Reception on the iPhone 4 sucks. Despite all the numbers Steve Jobs packed into a PowerPoint presentation to claim there was no problem with the iPhone 4 antenna (while simultaneously announcing a way to rectify the non-problem), the collective complaints of thousands of iPhone 4 users still speaks otherwise. Frequent dropped calls and notoriously poor reception make the iPhone 4 far inferior to the Captivate for making calls.

Rear Camera

Winner: Apple iPhone 4

The 8-megapixel camera on the Evo 4G has more resolution than both the 5-megapixel iPhone 4 and 5-megapixel Captivate, and more manual search controls, too. But that’s only one part of the story. The iPhone 4 takes better pictures than either competitor.

Credit goes to Apple’s backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, which moves the metal traces typically found on top of the chip to the back, blocking less light and improving overall image quality. Subjectively, photos from the iPhone 4 look brighter with richer color. Both Computerworld and Macworld ran the iPhone 4 head to head with the Evo 4G and found it took better shots, and our own real-life testing showed that the iPhone 4 trounced the Captivate on image quality.

Videoconferencing

Winner: iPhone 4

Front-facing cameras still remain a novelty in the smartphone world, but both the iPhone 4 and HTC Evo 4G offer them, while the Captivate owners are left out in the cold. At a technical level, the Evo 4G yet again offers more resolution: 1.3 megapixels to just 0.3 megapixels (VGA resolution) on the iPhone 4. But as we’ve learned from the previous category, that number isn’t everything.

Bandwidth severely limits the resolution you’re actually able to send over your phone when videoconferencing, so the Evo 4G can’t actually make use of all the resolution it has on tap unless it’s shooting video to record. With image quality nearly level, we give credit to the iPhone 4 for Facetime, which lets users initiate calls from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 using regular phone numbers – no usernames or logging in needed.

Battery Life

Winner: Draw between Apple iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate

HTC’s Evo 4G immediately gets booted from the running here. The same 4G speeds that give it killer connectivity also kill the battery in a hurry, leaving it first to run out of gas when these three phones hit the road.

Playing it by the numbers doesn’t lead to any clear-cut conclusion between the remaining contenders. Samsung rates the Captivate for five hours and 50 minutes of talk time and 340 hours of standby, while Apple rates the iPhone for seven hours of chatting and 300 hours of standby, making the Captivate the standby champ and iPhone 4 the king of talk time. While we’re inclined to favor talk time over standby, battery life seemed to play out roughly equally on these two in our real-life tests, so we’re calling it a draw.

Portability

Winner: Samsung Captivate

Clearly, the paperweight Evo 4G is a nonstarter here, but finding the winner among the two phones left standing isn’t easy.

At 2.5 inches wide and 0.39 inches thick, the Captivate fills the hand a bit more than the 2.31-inch-wide iPhone (less than the width of #2 pencil), and measures 0.02 inches thicker, too (roughly the same height as five sheets of printer paper stacked up). Fortunately, it’s also 0.22 inches shorter and weighs only 4.5 ounces to the iPhone’s 4.8 ounces. Which is really more important? We would prefer the shorter, lighter phone, especially when the extra flab it puts on in other dimensions is almost too small to measure.

Speed

Winner: Draw between Apple iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate

All three phones have processors running 1GHz, but which one actually gets the job done fastest? If only there was an easy answer.

Here’s the technical nitty gritty: The so-called A4 system-on-a-chip in the iPhone 4 actually uses an Apple-tailored version of the same ARM Cortex A8 found in the Samsung Captivate. In other words, they share the same silicon bloodline. The Evo 4G’s 1GHz Snapdragon chip, while quick, doesn’t quite run in the same pack as the A8-powered phones.

Which one delivers the best real-life performance? It depends what you’re doing. In our Web browser tests, the iPhone 4 toasted the Captivate over the same AT&T 3G connection, but in others, including Wi-Fi tests by PocketNow and TechnoBuffalo, the Captivate won. In other tests between common apps, both phones are hit or miss. For instance, the iPhone seems to open Google Maps faster, while the Captivate seems to open its camera app faster. In practical terms, they’re about as close as two smartphones come. Things to keep in mind: The iPhone 4 still will not display Flash, so websites will naturally load more quickly. And if you happen to be in a 4G zone, the HTC EVO 4G can load web pages in no time either.

Storage

Winner: Samsung Captivate

For $200, both the iPhone 4 and Captivate deliver 16GB of internal storage, while the Evo 4G comes with only 8GB, putting it out of the running right from the start.

The Captivate manages to stretch far beyond the iPhone 4 with the inclusion of a microSD slot. Besides lending flexibility (you can upgrade when you need the space, rather than guessing whether you will when you buy the phone), it’s also cheaper. While it will cost another $100 to get to 32GB of total storage on the iPhone 4, you can nab a 16GB microSD card and put the Captivate on par for under $40. Even better, it can expand up to a total of 48GB by adding a 32GB microSD card, a level of storage the iPhone 4 can’t touch.

Overall Winner: Apple iPhone 4

The Evo 4G made an impressive showing as the very first 4G phone back in June, but as you can see, it doesn’t hold up nearly as well under the microscope in other categories – at least when stacked against the best other smartphones in the world. The real fight here is between the iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate.

Had Apple’s overly clever antenna design not blown up in its face and rattled the foundation of the company’s glitch-free reputation, the iPhone 4 would be a standout winner between the two. Instead, the Captivate’s larger storage capacity, gorgeous OLED screen, rock-solid connectivity and relative parity on many other fronts bring it as close to toppling the Cupertino giant as any Android device has likely ever come. But not quite enough to call it an iPhone killer.

In breaking the apparent tie between the two devices (three iPhone wins, three Captivate wins, and two draws), we had to consider a number of other factors that should influence any smartphone buyer. The iPhone 4 has a significantly larger app library (225,000 to 70,000), a more solid feel, an endless array of third-party accessories, and historically, regular OS updates from Apple. (The two-year-old iPhone 3G can still run iOS 4, while Samsung’s first Android device, the Galaxy i7500, received such poor support that it inspired over 7,000 signatures on a petition, and remains stuck at Android 1.6.) Taking all these factors into account, the iPhone 4 remains a best buy, but with a sticky asterisk next to it: Buyers who live in areas with poor coverage – or who use their phones for business and can’t simply cuss at dropped calls and call back – should gravitate towards the Captivate’s better reception.

  1. Timboslice at 12:06pm 5th February 2011 Craptivate still doesn't have an official froyo update. Returned mine yesterday for a 3GS lol. I'd rather have a dated phone than an unsupported one.
  2. ryuslee at 8:18pm 16th January 2011 the winner is Android Phone, and iphone4 chipset was build by samsung... OS Phone will dead hahahahaha..........
  3. czarpoop at 11:56pm 13th January 2011 Right now I'm typing on my HTC EVO 4. Just got it a few days ago, I don't even try to compare this phone to any of the other great new phones out there. It really depends on the money your planningto spend on phone plans... an iPhone woulda cost me almost 100$ and maybe more. The captivate would be a little less than that but let's face it at&t is not cheap. Obviously sprint carriers and gonna go for the evo because its the best phone for there plan. I get 20% off my monthly bill with Sprint, using this phone I'm paying about 70 bucks total. You cant beat that with at&t. They want to much money for what they have. I don't know about any of you all, but 70 bucks for 4g, 8mega pixle camera, big ass screen, buncho connection options, Sprint tv, navi, its just sooo much for a way cheaper price. I was a t mobile guy and went for the mytouch when it first came out, it doesn't even compare to this. It's all in personal preference and what you can pay for. Personally comparing 2 at&t phones to one Sprint phone is dumb. Id say do a comparison of the HTC evo and that other galaxy s slide phone that Sprint has. People who have Sprint would def look at a comparison like that. Personally I love the evo, I compare it to my old phone (mytouch 3g) and I am quite happy with my switch. Not to mention the cheaper phone bill that comes in the mail every month : )
    1. nappyboy at 12:30am 7th March 2011 I want to point out there there have been less than 250K EVO's sold versus 1.7 million for the iPhone 4. People are not idiots. If the EVO was better, then more people would have them!
  4. Cedes at 8:42am 11th January 2011 I love my Captivate. It does everything an iPhone does but more!! You can personalize it. Its like a jail broke iPhone!
  5. beachsidechurch at 8:35pm 9th January 2011 MY At&t iphone rocks. I came from a blackberry torch which only advantage was the physical keyboard under the sliding screen. Iphone has dropped NO CALLS. Reception is magnificent WITHOUT a case! AT&T WON'T let you post Iphone reviews because their profit and COMMISSION IS MUCH LESS WITH THE IPHONE! SO THEY PUSH THE OTHERS!!!! GO IPHONE 4!!!! PERFECTION~!!!
  6. TJM at 8:25pm 8th January 2011 I have to comment on the constant iPhone, Apple bashing. It's really stupid when you think about it. If you like Android-SO WHAT! It's your choice and that's fine. But constantly calling iPhone users degrading names is just dumb. You're like the sports fan that gets so upset over your team losing that you can't eat. Both phones have their pros and cons. I personally have owned 2 Android phones and I'm a little tired of both. I had a MyTouch when it first came out and then a Samsung Vibrant. While they can be fun I find that they are not as easy to integrate with my Macs. (yes Macs plural) I fine the music players to be buggy and the operating system to be more geared to those that like to "tinker". The only thing keeping me from buying the iPhone 4 is AT&T but I hear that will change. If so, then I'll be dumping my Vibrant and getting an iPhone.
  7. Dave at 3:44pm 24th December 2010 Hey u guys did u notice instead of "We put Apple’s iPhone 4 against Samsung’s Captivate and HTC’s Evo 4G to see which smartphone delivers the best bang for $200." they put "We pit Apple’s iPhone 4 against Samsung’s Captivate and HTC’s Evo 4G to see which smartphone delivers the best bang for $200." in the beginning of the article. Btw, IPHONE RULES! I might get one tommorow :D
  8. Latrech at 5:31pm 12th December 2010 lol really iphone is a pile its ok 2 say that apple didnt do a good job here. The driod will always be better than apple for 1 reason above all else, because the CEO of Google isnt a facist like Steve Jobs and allows other companies that know how to make phones use there software. And they dont have to control ever fasit of there product
  9. Gregncos at 5:35pm 21st November 2010 Thanks for the variety of feed back about these phone choices. As a consumer, I like having choices and options. Which is why I own an iPad and will switch to the Captivate when my ATT contract expires in January. Both have their advantages and I have no problem existing in both the iOS and Android universes.
  10. TZollman at 9:04am 19th November 2010 Ok... here's a question... what does the Evo have anything to do with it anyway!!! it runs on a completely seperate network than the captivate or iphone! Compare the captivate and iphone and the captivate still comes out on top! Apple does not GUARANTEE the A4 processor is 1GB or better but Samsung does on the Captivate. Comparing the Evo to this is like comparing 2 cars and then throwing in a Jet!! I have all 3 of these phones and have gone through every test possible.. The Evo (if using SPRINT) is obviously the best choice...HOWEVER... if you are on At&t then I would urge you to consider the captivate for speed, portability, and the amazing screen. BUT.. the captivate doesn't have the flash or the front facing camera. That is about all you are going to lose. The OTA updates for the captivate are SOOOOO much nicer than waiting 4 hours from Apple and the drag and drop ease of use on your computer for the captivate compared to having to sync anything you want is amazing too!! throw a front facing camera and a flash on the captivate and it trumps ALMOST any phone on the market right now!!
    1. Tina at 3:19am 22nd December 2010 apple doesn't have flash yet...aside from netflix....member they are at war with Flash Players...lol!!!
  11. EGF at 10:47pm 14th November 2010 I sell AT&T phones. Every day I have a iphone customer come in to upgrade. After playing with both the iphone 4 and the captivate the majority of them leave happily with the samsung device. The reviewer is incorrect. The samsung galaxy s captivate "is" an iphone killer.
  12. charli at 8:43am 8th November 2010 people please help me out!! i want a knew mobile phone, and my m8 says that hers is going to be waayyy better!! she has a galaxy s. what phone do i get to prove its better?!!! thanks 4 your help!!
  13. Austin at 7:49am 8th November 2010 But the evo is on the worst plan in the world sprint is shot it's last in every thing & AT&T has good ratings just like VERiZON iPHONE in better plan it's better
  14. Blammo! at 11:44am 7th November 2010 A life time supply of apples!
  15. joe at 5:20pm 5th November 2010 No way is facetime limited by wifi connectivity better than video conferencing anywhere on the Evo 4G. How much does apple pay these guys to lie for them?
  16. Scotty at 2:05pm 5th November 2010 I have had the Samsung Captivate and the Iphone 4 and all i can say is the Captivate looks wise is way better than the Iphone, also the Captivate and Evo have HQ streaming which is ridiculous. I phone is not as good looking and the Cameras are close to the same, I dont know where this article is coming from but im thinking apple...
  17. Blammo! at 1:16pm 5th November 2010 This benchmark was paid for.. Just want to put this out there, has anyone watched futurama? the one about moms eyephone. Well anyway this article sounds funded. The iphone is great if you like all your decisions about what you are doing with your phone to be made for you. I'll be honest, I'm researching what phone to get next. I don't even own any of these phones, but I firmly believe apple sucks. They could have the biggest selection of useless apps, consistent updates that do nothing, and everywhere you look they are jamming their accessories down your throat. They could make one of solid gold and I would seriously take a poop on it and upload a picture of it to facespace or mybook with any other non apple phone any day. Thats my opinion, no one can sway it. If the iphone makes you happy than good I really don't care. If the EVO is the best thing since sliced bread to you, great I hope you don't spend too much time alone with it, you'll go blind that way. They are just phones!

Right now my phone has me locked out becase it decided that I put in my combination in wrong to many times, IT WAS CHARGING ALL NIGHT, NOW IM LOCKED OUT OF MY FKNG PHONE?!?!?!?!?! WARNING TO ALL MORONS OUT THERE, IPHONE IS BETTER THAN ANY FKNG DROID!

  23. Budgie at 2:17am 28th October 2010 Just changed from blackberry bold to galaxy s after doing bout a weeks solid research on the net, the iphone 4 was also in the running as one of my choices. Can honestly say if you opt for the galaxy s you will not be disappointed when you really look closely the facts speak for themselves.
  24. Mitch at 8:57pm 27th October 2010 Thanks for your info. I live in Korea. most Koreans are mainly influenced by Samsung. Korea is kingdom of Samsung! People say Samsung do everything to win Apple at the world smart phone market. So I want to know if galaxy s is good or not in objective sight.
  25. robm321 at 9:16am 25th October 2010 Talk about a reviewer slacking off and not putting effort into the article. This is ridden with misinformation and favoratism. How much would an iphone 48GB cost if you could buy it. Yet there is little consideration for how HUGE a point that is. But he gives huge weight to the amount of apps. All major apps are covered and continue to increase. Also, lack of flash on web surfing should weight large as well. I have friends that don't bother surfing the web anymore because of the let down looking at all those black squares. That being said, the iphone is among the top phones along with the Samsung (don't have sprint so can't comment). Anyone that says any of these phones is an easy win is ridiculous. Most intelligent reviews put the Samsung and Iphone on par and make the consumer decide what features they like better.
  26. knittyknatty at 8:09pm 22nd October 2010 I am an iphone user (3g, 3gs and now iphone4) however I have tried the samsung galaxy s..captivate? and have to admit the samsung has some lovely features that i wish Iphone 4 had. Side by side the samsung is definately a brighter screen,The phone itself is crystal clear, swype text is fantastic, as are many of the shortcuts to apps , i love the ease in which you put the phone into flight mode etc. ..the apps down load in record time off android, and the app shop opens with no lagging. However the iphone 4 is terribly slow when trying to open the app store and browse through...painfully slow to the point it wont even show the images for each app...many apps won't even download off the apple app shop, saying you need to do it on the computer or with a wifi connection...the samsung can do it all off 3g. I am thinking maybe I should go back to the 3gs model or stick with the samsung and get an ipod touch...then I have the best of both words. quite disappointed in the new iphone to be honest...very little has changed.
  27. rotarycrew at 2:10pm 22nd October 2010 I have been an iPhone user for about a year now, and once i heard all the hype about the craptivate i went and bought one. I was instantly dissapointed. The captivate feels light and cheap, where the 4′s design feels solid with some weight. The texting is miles behind iPhone. My iPhone4′s internet is significantly faster than the captivate’s, and youtube is like dialup on the captivate. Constantly rebuffing, i could not get through a video to save my life without it stopping several times on the captivate, where the 4 would breeze through without a pause. Mind you theese phones were tested in the exact same spot, so no signal loss, even though the captivate could not get anywhere near the same signal strength as the 4 in the same location.
    1. dan at 7:30pm 31st October 2010 lol, u obviously never owned or even personally reviewed a captivate because everything that you stated is false and very far from the truth. My rooted, lag fix, froyo updated captivate blows away any Iphone4 in sight with amazing speed, versatile scrolling and smoothness, and zero lag. It's not hard to watch any of the 100's of videos that are on youtube about the captivate with froyo or a lagfix and easily tell that you are talking out of your ass and are an isheep
  28. Frank at 3:55pm 9th October 2010 How could you find the iphone better on ANY count? It is best known for all the things it CAN'T do. Front facing camera is a novelty to you? I'v had that for YEARS on Nokias. And yes, Samsung have let their costomers down with the Galaxy spica, but mine is still better than most: I will replace it when I find an Android phone with better battery life
  29. steve at 8:54am 3rd October 2010 This review is so rubbish lol. I can tell you that 99% of iphone owner do not know what is inside their device. Y bother explaining geek stuffs to dummos =D
  30. jsmith at 6:03am 17th September 2010 okay time to set some of this straight,i stumbled on this while browsing for a review of the galaxy s vibrant vs iphone 4. i work for bell mobilty (canada) and iv done about 50 side by side comparisons between them, i just wanted to see what consumers think. comparison by sales is a little over rated. Everyone knows apple is a master of marketing. i own a mac. they make a great product: but when it comes to phones.... apples main expertise is bull****. the retina display my have great resolution, but the amoled screen is far brighter and i find the colours more vivid. id like to see apple make a bigger screen without dropping that nice resolution aswell. screen hands down samsung. literally today i did a picture side by side with a samsung vibrant and iphone 4, a customer even agreed samsung hands down had a more detailed picture and quote felt" the iphone 4 suffered from a form of over-exposure" leaving out some detail. reception: if you cant make a call, how is it a good phone? the reception on the iphone 4 is a joke. battery: samsung. more features, larger screen.... and they last relatively the same? thats kinda sad.. and at least with the galaxys you can change the battery,THATS RIGHT so your phone will last your contract length ;) speed: samsung: true multi task, live wall paper, 2gb of ROM which the iphone DOESNT HAVE, all while keeping up with apples "simple ios4" while obviously running more content im not even going to continue this any longer... the idea of the iphone being in the same catagory as a galaxy makes me sick. p.s. i havent tried the evo but it sounds great, big screen, good conectivity, and awesome camera, im sold on the idea alone.
  31. ndur at 5:41pm 15th September 2010 I own a Captivate. I thought that my Captivate had a problem with connectivity until I read the IPhone 4 complaints. My friends own Iphones and the phone calls drop many times while we are talking. Onle have 1 complaint. I haven't been able to figure out how to store my pics sent to me via text message. have family members that send me lots of pics via text message and would like to be able to store them.

  33. Atish Nischal at 3:46am 15th September 2010 Just to put these number in perspective, Apple sells 8M iPhones a quarter. If Samsung really manages to sell 10M Galaxy S by the end of the year, it’ll sell around 30% as many Androids as Apple sells iPhones. Now, apple might increase the iPhone sales rate, but we need to remember that the Galaxy only came out in the second quarter. Very impressive achievement for Samsung .http://mobileinindia.in
  34. Laura at 3:49pm 14th September 2010 I have the samsung phone and I am glad I made that choice. Many like the iphone, but it is up to each person what they prefer!
  35. Rene at 12:10pm 12th September 2010 hi ajr, thks for feedback & sorry for late reply. actually i'm from Asean, now getting use to the 'life without a smart phone'... haha.... :P now i plan to wait for potential update from Apple on iphone 4 after 30 Sept 2010 before making the final decision. I heard & read that there will be a hardware change. i also have discovered 2 solutions on for getting paid apps for Galaxy S in my region via 2 friends who are using this mobile. but still having problem in doing video call between my old 3G nokia phone & Galaxy S of a friend, wd it due to the carrier?? now i just wait for the carriers in my country to launch the iphone 4 package (expecting in next 1-3 weeks), compare the package, also will see any update by Apple on iphone 4 after 30 Sept 2010 in US (this potential new batch might only available in my country by Nov :( , let's see ). of cox the pro w iphone 4 for me personally enable the restore of my backup.... just wait and see now. nice day
  36. josh at 12:22pm 11th September 2010 you need to compare evo battery life without the 4g in use to give a better comparison. the other 2 dont even have it so its not a fair comparison
  37. Help at 5:04pm 9th September 2010 Continued from above: WHAT TO DO???? Not a fan of either by any means. Really pissed at Itunes this week too for erasing constantly my playlists and not installing correctly on my computer. Someone tell a girl who needs a long battery, needs to take good pictures and be able to both text and email them quickly, to access her email from a secured site at work and at home, manage a calendar and take a gazillion calls a day which phone will be best?
    1. jsmith at 6:13am 17th September 2010 "take a gazillion calls a day which phone will be best?" not the iphone..... iphone has always had notoriously bad connectivity the iphone 4 is even worse
  38. Help at 5:04pm 9th September 2010 My Iphone is starting to act weird and I am eligible for an upgrade and am also trying to figure out what to do. Stores aren't carrying 3g or 3gs phones anymore it seems so I have to go with Iphone 4 or Captivate. I was leaning towards just getting the dang Iphone 4 bc I am familiar with how to use it (and I do use it alot) then it seemed everyone was saying what a piece of junk it was. Then I was almost talked into switching to the Captivate and was reading about the problems connecting with outlook (major need of mine) and GPS problems (less of a concern, I just use the one in my car). I don't really care about apps - they all seem to be so silly to me - dont' care about having fish swim accross my screen or having a new fart-simulated ring tone. So I'm still confused. Would be great to have a flash on the camera. Don't see myself crying at night bc I can't video conference either.
  39. Bill Gates at 9:24pm 6th September 2010 Steve Jobbs is a wimpy pencil neck geek. Enough said.
  40. Brian at 7:54pm 5th September 2010 How can the iPhone win a tie when you stated yourself that you were evaluating phones, not media players: "While it looks more vibrant inside, it also washes out easily in the sun, and whites swing toward an unnatural blue. While the bigger size of the Evo 4G and Samsung Captivate might be superior for watching movies, we’re evaluating phones, not media players." To settle the tie, go with the bare essentials of a PHONE...... connectivity!!! iPhone LOSES!!!
    1. jsmith at 6:09am 17th September 2010 how does the iphone count? you have to be connected to the network to be a phone ;) agreed 100%
  41. ajr at 4:46am 4th September 2010 There's a lot of smart people here. Obviously the person that wrote this article has to be a blind iphone fan. Saying that iphone 4 is better than the EVO... Its a joke!!!! In the past iphone was the better phone in the market, but this is the present, EVO is way better than the iphone!!!! Android devices in a near future will dominate the market, not the iphone.
  42. Sam at 7:30pm 3rd September 2010 How does the iPhone 4 win with camera when it doesn't even show correct colours like whites
    1. indecisive at 1:08am 2nd November 2010 its "color"
  43. lustwaffe at 10:01pm 1st September 2010 Dude, go to South Korea or Japan and say that the technolgy and connections arent there yet. Video conference has been a standard in Korea for half a decade. Basically, every crap phone in Korea owns this function and runs perfectly. We're just really slow out here in the west.
  44. Brandon at 9:05pm 30th August 2010 Nick... I've got to blast you on this man. You claim the real fight here is between the iphone 4 and Captivate thus implicitly stating that the iphone 4 and (namely) the Captivate are superior. However, in a subsequent article you explicitly stated the EVO bested the Samsung Epic 4G. I find this laughable because anyone who knows even a little about smartphones knows that there is no way the Captivate is superior to the Epic 4G. Thats like Comparing Kobe Bryant (iphone 4), Lebron James (Captivate), and Dwyane Wade (Evo) and saying the real fight is between LBJ and Kobe then trurning around and saying Dwyane Wade is better than Jordan (Epic 4G).
  45. guest at 11:56am 26th August 2010 The author is obviously an Apple fanboy. He said that we are not comparing media devices so the Captivate's superior screen didn't matter, giving the trophy to the iPhone. Apparently, if we are not comparing media devices, then we must be comparing cameras (not phones). The iPhone ranks in the toilet for reception/call quality, but it comes out on top overall??? How so??? Just because it has a fancier camera? Who would choose to use a cell phone for taking photos that matter anyway? I'd rather use a real camera for photos and chose a phone that can actually make calls. I am an iPhone user, and I'm very unhappy with my phone
  46. Dave at 8:41pm 25th August 2010 Go with the iphone4 is amazing.., im not a fanboy.
  47. Rene at 11:54am 24th August 2010 hi guys, i was a 6 months iPhone 3GS user until it was stolen 1 month ago...sheesshhh. miss it. now i have to make a decision either to get iPhone 4 or Samsung Galaxy S. Both are great phones and it is sooo difficult to make a decision now. I think most important criteria are what the individual needs (your prioritized features). i like to play with apps, download apps (free & paid version), & i am a normal user (non-IT background, so know nothing about jailbreak). Between both phones, all features fits me well, below are my major concerns :- 1) Apple creates a very good environment in itune for apps surfing, downloading & upgrading. easy to find paid apps for upgrading But android's market seems lacking of this features, i only can see free apps & cant find paid apps (in HTC legend & Galaxy S). my friend in Singapore also having the same problem with Galaxy S, not able to upgrade the free apps to paid apps (light version to full version), any advise? 2) apps release in itune are controlled by apple, thus minimum risk of virus / malware. Android has a open market, which is a + & -. The market grows rapidly but I have big concern on virus in apps. I am expose to bigger risk as every week i will download 10-20 new apps / e-book for exploring... please advise. 1& 2 are my major stopping stones in getting Galaxy S, and i do like this phone a lot. If i get iphone 4, i am able to restore back my backup data of stolen iphone 3GS. P/S: i am confused with a info. given in one of post above, my understanding is Samsung Galaxy S does support video chat via 3G & wifi with a front camera which is compatible to many phone, correct? facetime in iphone4 only works for iphone4 to iphone 4 via wifi 'now', but not understand why apple keeps emphasizing this feature?? please help me to decide what phone shall i get :) many thanks
    1. ajr at 4:59am 4th September 2010 Well if the data that you had in the other phone is important for you, get the iphone 4. But if you want to try something better and different go with the Galaxy S. Obviously you are an AT&T costumer, and theres a new data plan with them. Now you have to pay $30, I think, for only 2G of usage. So if you want to switch and try another carriers, may be that could be an option. And finally, you can't add insurance to the iphone, in the Galaxy yes
    2. Confused in CO at 5:01pm 9th September 2010 My Iphone is starting to act weird and I am eligible for an upgrade and am also trying to figure out what to do. WHAT TO DO???? Someone tell a girl who needs a long battery, needs to take good pictures and be able to both text and email them quickly, to access her email from a secured site at work and at home, manage a calendar and take a gazillion calls a day which phone will be best?
      1. Rene at 12:21pm 12th September 2010 hi, Confused in CO , in the past (6-7 months) with iphone 3GS, i dont have much problem with it & itune, except the bluetooth (not user friendly, not compatible to many other devices), battery, not a up-to-dated camera for a smart phone, bad design & quality for USB cable (different material from those in US)... (as i am also a mechanical design engineer... cable is not in optimized design!), rubberized insulator are not in good design (even i am not specialized in this, just compare the cable joint area with connector with other wire / connector with cable).
  48. Danny at 10:49am 23rd August 2010 Your wrong DT, it's actually "The screens on all three phones equate to small, big and bigger." In no way is the Iphone 4's screen big anymore, it is relatively small compared to most major phones available now.
  49. jude at 6:13am 23rd August 2010 I can't believe this, so many comments on such a no-brainer comparison. Frankly when I read this article even I think that it is biased towards the iphone (maybe the editor/writer has one). But guys no need to fight over it, I am quite sure if you google it you will find plenty of more sites (some even more reputable than this) which say that the galaxy s or htc evo 4g is better. So relax we all know which phone is good and which we will buy. Finally on a counter note to a comment above saying x million have bought the iphone here is what I have to say 'people are idiots, individuals are smart', this is a classic example of herd behavior and apple knows it and exploits it thats all.
  50. ohnoitsaspider at 9:28pm 22nd August 2010 The screen on the Galaxy S DOES NOT was out in the sun (that's the Nexus One/Incredible OLED) because it has SAMOLED not plain AMOLED and saying that megapixels don't matter and then saying that means the iPhone wins for no reason is stupid.
  51. OMG LOL at 3:08am 21st August 2010 OMG look how worked you dorks get over phone specs! Let me give you advice... buy the phone you like, use it, shut your pie hole.
  52. droidsucker at 11:58am 17th August 2010 If you bought a Android phone, tough! live with it. Complain to yourself that you were an idiot. You made the choice now, shut up, and live with it.... suckers.
  53. Rob at 8:36am 13th August 2010 By the way Froyo will be release on Galaxy phones in the beginning of September.
  54. Rob at 8:33am 13th August 2010 I have a Samsung Captivate - I had a iPhone 3Gs before that and my neighbor has a EVO. My boss has a iPhone 4. Some things to consider, the fact this article compares 2 Android phones to one Apple phone should paint a picture in and of itself. The Samsung Captivate is a Galaxy S phone and either is or will be carried by every major carrier and at least one "minor" carrier (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon as well as USA Cellular). Don't get me wrong I loved my iPhone for the apps, especially the games...but that doesn't necessarily make a good phone. I have read (and believe) reports stating the 3gs is better at (ahem) being a phone. In all I have to say the Galaxy S is a great phone. And I do get amused at the fact that my neighbor is always running back to his charger, but otherwise the EVO is a fantastic bit of technology...I have only two minor complaints about the Galaxy. No front facing camera. No led flash for photos...but I think the camera (which kind of got dissed in this review) is fantastic. I compared it to the photos on my boss' iPhone four and I thought the images looked really crisp on his, but had richer color on mine...
    1. Cam at 2:20pm 17th October 2010 Im about to get my upgrade and and trying to decide between the iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate. I do business and need to be able to send many people the same message at a time. I know the iPhone 4 now does group texting and so I am wondering if the Captivate is capable of this also?

  57. andrew at 7:21pm 8th August 2010 (coughs) article paid for by...winner
  58. Erich at 5:43pm 8th August 2010 The iPhone4 does not have a swype keyboard, no removable battery, no sd card support, no widget support, no true multi tasking capabilities, no free navigation, and you cant tether it to your laptop for free and surf the web, and it has a smaller screen. This comparison is garbage. iPhone wins for a larger app store? what crap. The iPhone4 is the same iPhone from 3 years ago just in a new shell with a front facing camera that only works if you are in wifi and chatting with another iphone4 user. you can put a Ferrari motor in Kia, but at the end of the day you're still driving a Kia. Samsung has already announced that the Captivate will receive Android 2.2 in September, so their claim that iPhones are better bc of they are upgradable to new OS is dismissed. I own the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant for T-Mobile, which is essentially the same as the Captivate. Ive owned plenty of phones over the last 3 years, including an iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S is the best smart phone on the market today. The EVO is better than the iPhone4 too. HTC sence is amazing!
  59. plz guys be nice at 5:48am 8th August 2010 OMG so many fanboys... plz shut up, let me choose. i'm getting hate evo and galaxy cuz of you fanboys!!!!!! i want to be fair, not like you idiots!
  60. :)(((( at 5:48pm 7th August 2010 Super AMOLED(Galaxy S) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HD LCD(iPhone4) >>> LCD(Evo 4G)
  61. You at 10:30pm 6th August 2010 Nick, please stop writing, I won't read on this site again. Stop with your false information. Wait until, 2.2 fyro comes out and lets see which one is faster in speed =[ - obviously Samsung wins, faster load with a hummingbird processor. You are so biased, its not even funny. Samsung Screen wins, also do some research on what kind of wifi connectivity Samsung has as well as reception.
  62. Stephen at 9:45pm 6th August 2010 PS - I read Nick's previous comparison of the iPhone to EVO. Camera Winner: HTC EVO 4G Processor Winner: Draw I guess you change whatever you can to make your favorite win. I read the Macworld (iPhone wins a Macworld comparison? No way!) camera comparison as well as the one from Computerworld. Read the comments to those comparisons some time. The readers do a pretty good job of discrediting them and showing both Droid X and EVO having better cameras.
  63. Stephen at 9:02pm 6th August 2010 I own an EVO. I have tried the iPhone 4. Not only do I disagree with this article, but I really take offense to the fact that it seems more like an Apple advert than an objective, quantifiable review. The author contradicts himself with his own arguments. Each category should have been WEIGHTED as well. First, the larger screens of the Captivate and EVO are dismissed because "we're evaluating phones, not media players." Almost EVERY CATEGORY in this article is NON PHONE related! Storage.. cameras .. etc. Bias. Second, "reception on the iPhone 4 sucks." This reminds me of the Consumer Reports review. They could not recommend the iPhone4 BECAUSE IT IS A CRAPPY PHONE. This goes back to my mention of a WEIGHTED scoring system. If a phone has crappy reception, it fails. Game over. Third, Captivate is faster than EVO? EVO had the OTA Froyo 2.2 update available at the time of this article. Forget the technical brochure for a moment. EVO running Froyo 2.2 is FASTER than the Captivate for everything except 3D gaming since Captivate does not have a Froyo update until who knows when. Weight the speed differences. Let me know how much of a difference there is if ANY. Fourth, I compared the EVO and iPhone4 side by side. The iPhone4 is not MUCH smaller than the EVO. It does, however, have a denser feel. EVO makes better use of its size with a smaller overall bezel and I think that alone makes it more "portable." Fifth, Facetime gives iPhone another win?? This is another point of serious Apple bias, just like @JDW points out above. The way the author tries to play down the TECHNICAL advantages of the EVO is laughable. Facetime doesn't even work unless you have WiFi, but the author days the EVO's resolution advantage can't be taken advantage of due to 3G/4G limitations? I call BS. The main FAIL of Facetime is that it is only iPhone to iPhone. The EVO on the other hand can do Android to Android, Android to iPhone, Android to Symbian, etc with software like Fring and Qik. Plus, they DO work over 3G/4G and DO take advantage of the EVO's higher resolution. I would have also liked to have seen more than 5-6 categories/comparisons. Usability, general OS features, customizability, etc would have been nice, and are kind of expected when writing an article that influences someone's purchase. At any rate, I say use whatever phone makes you happy, but don't write misleading articles. Stick to objective, repeatable, and quantifiable comparisons.
    1. idiot at 3:17am 21st August 2010 really dude? why do you care so much? buy the phone you like or think is better and then SHUT UP ABOUT IT. Are you one of those people that is always bragging about your phone? Let me guess, you see a friend or co-worker with an iphone or something you feel is inferior and begin to harp on how much better your phone is.. Well congrats, you are the coolest guy on earth. well not really, but at least your phone is.
      1. ohnoitsaspider at 9:32pm 22nd August 2010 Hey, if you don't like comparisons, get off this site.
        1. noname at 3:43pm 2nd October 2010 @ Stephen in my opinion the small review that you made in a comment box was more valuable to me then the review it self. I don't think anyone can disagree that this review was pretty iPhone biased
    2. Pat at 8:53pm 24th October 2010 What's funny is that the author gives portability win to the captivate for being shorter and lighter, then takes it away in the intangible section by saying that the iphone is more substantial. He likes it both ways.
    3. jonmeuser at 8:39am 14th December 2010 Here is my one comment. The phone is only as good as it's provider. Sprint is the worst coverage or any of the carriers. Let's see the EVO on a GSM network provider and then it would be a real player. I have only seen the EVO on sprint, which by far, has the worst coverage of any of the major providers. I guess the best phone is the one that works for you and your situation, not which one has the most toys!
  64. Leo at 3:43pm 6th August 2010 "For $200, both the iPhone 4 and Captivate deliver 16GB of internal storage, while the Evo 4G comes with only 8GB, putting it out of the running right from the start. Even better, it can expand up to a total of 48GB by adding a 32GB microSD card, a level of storage the iPhone 4 can’t touch." Did anyone else notice that in the storage category(quoted above) he completely ignores the fact that the Evo also has upgradable micro SD slot? In my opinion, iPhone should not even be considered given the fact that once you buy a 16GB model, you're stuck with that amount.
  65. JDW at 9:07pm 5th August 2010 I can understand subject preference for one feature or another, but I'm really sick of all the reviews that say iPhone4's video conferencing is better. You can only use it if you want to video conference with another iPhone4 user, and only if you are both within a WiFi connection. With the Evo you can conference with any other Andriod phone (assuming it has a front facing camera) or any laptop/computer with a webcam in the world, and you can connect with 3G, 4G, or WiFi. Personally based on YouTube videos both options are crap. The technology and connections just aren't there yet on mobile phones to make it something other than a novelty. But Evo's crap should rank way higher than iPhone4's crap.
  66. Amp at 11:45pm 5th August 2010 This reads like the winner section was written first. Hmmmm??? Also using macworld as a reference is highly suspect. This article is sales propaganda for Apple.
  67. Johnny at 8:18pm 5th August 2010 When did Captivate become the fastest android device? What about Droids from Verizion?
    1. Erich at 5:31pm 8th August 2010 Samsungs Hummingbird processor is faster than Droid X's Texas Instruments 1ghz processor and Incredibles 1ghz snapdragon processor.
  68. Alex at 6:59am 5th August 2010 The iphone4 CONSISTENTLY gets the top spot among professional reviews. These pros know what they're talking about and have tried out all the gadgets out there. Still, it boils down to the users' personal choice. No one is forcing anyone to buy any of these devices, but let's just face it, the iphone4 is clear the winner. If it was the Evo or the Captivate that won, I still would choose the ip4 over those two devices, and would still be happy with my choice. But just like what the reviewer said. These are all very capable devices. But one of them has to reign supreme, and we all have to respect that.
    1. jsmith at 7:50am 17th September 2010 you are brain washed by apple propaganda. enough said.
      1. noname at 3:34pm 2nd October 2010 yes he is an apple sheeple
    2. jonmeuser at 8:34am 14th December 2010 I'm betting the Apple haters never had an Iphone. I have been looking for a replacement, and can't find anything that works as well. Maybe the EVO will be a competitor when they decide to go GSM like the rest of the world. Verizon and Sprint are just as bad as apple with the proprietary networks. the Evo loses because of Sprints coverage, not because of the games and toys that are on it.
  69. Edward Hewer at 6:17am 5th August 2010 It's nice to finally see competition for the Nokia N97. 5 Megapixel camera, FM Radio transmitter, TV Out, Superb battery life, Free Turn by Turn voice navigation, true video phone calling, true multitasking. Even though the iPhone 4 can't do some of those things it's still nice to see progress being made.
    1. jonmeuser at 8:30am 14th December 2010 I'm sorry. FM Radio, TV Out? I guess if you are using as a toy, that's really cool. Another guy can hook up his phone to the PS3? Why would any normal person want to do that! I agree with the guys above. Just give us real feedback and comparisons, not the lovers review. I have and IPhone, and don't like having to unlock it with any updates. But I have yet to find anything that really compares. Would like some valuable input.
  70. ozgamer at 3:02am 5th August 2010 Apple customers must love getting bent over and over again.
  71. JAG at 9:54pm 4th August 2010 Dude. blah, blah, blah, EVO, blah, blah, blah, blah, iPhone sucks, blah, blah, blah, I can tether, blah, blah, blah, rape, blah, blah, blah, dropped calls, blah, blah, blah. This is way too boring. You like your phone and I like my phone, so why all the blah, blah, blah. Do you think you can get me to feel bad that I didn't buy the phone you bought? Are you guys earning some commission from each phone sold? Gimme a break. Let's hear only from those who have actually TRIED BOTH PHONES then tells us which one worked for you. We don't need to read the angry rants against the other guy who bought the OTHER phone (so childish).
  72. Don at 1:21pm 4th August 2010 EVO 4G rapes the iphone4 and all EVO 4G is too good for iphone4. iphone can't report signals properly, Jobs admited it. iphone dropping signals, dropping calls, antena problems, lacking so many functionality to EVO 4G. EVO 4G is the best super smartphone as of right now, next in line is EPIC 4G, then the DroidX, iphone
  73. f-da-i-phony at 12:59am 4th August 2010 fook iphone ...this article is written or a paid commercial by apple anyways ... android is gaining more and more market share as we speak... the iphone is a barbie doll phone ...just a cosmetic glamour show phone ...good for some ignorant pink purse carrying chicks or chick like guys....
  74. steve at 10:30pm 3rd August 2010 Evo rapes the iPhone. I can tether it to my ps3 and computer at the same time, while playing Pandora, while making a video call, and download torrents on the pc. I get about 600kBps through utorrent and zero lag on ps3 call of duty multiplayer. Pandora is set to high quality and the video call is perfect. No kidding. IPhone cant even make calls without dropping them and good luck multitasking with the "tray game"
  75. mookie at 3:55pm 3rd August 2010 How these phones comes out of the box is different from what you can do with it. Sorry dudes/gals, I have ATT HTC touch pro 2/tilt 2, and want to get the EVO. If I dont like, I will return it. I never had a problem with ATT, no drop calls or etc. I have 4 phones, montly bill under 200 bucks. Depending where you reside, and if you dont travel alot, then its what network coverage you need. What Im looking forward most to to flash a custom rom (root) from XDA developer. It means, faster and way more customizable then what it already can do. Imagine that. For you guys who does not know what that means, look it up, if if you have no interest, then fine. We have the right to vote, Im voting for the EVO.
    1. Topgun at 10:34am 4th August 2010 Highly recommend the CM6 mod for the Evo. That is what I am running. Makes it the fastest phone out there period. You can see it on XDA.
  76. JAG at 3:26pm 3rd August 2010 For the record, my wife and I have had the iPhone since the iPhone 3g. We've always loved the iPhone features. AT&T has never been a problem for me. I have the iPhone 4 now. It's amazing. Can't live without it. I recommend you try it. If you don't like it, take it back. Done!
  77. JAG at 3:17pm 3rd August 2010 Crazy peeps on here. Why does everyone try soooo hard to explain why they made a better decision in buying one phone over another. People get their feelings hurt when someone writes an article about how one phone is better, which makes all the owners of the losing phone angry. Geez. This is a free market. All phone retailers (and cell providers) have a return policy. Buy a phone, use it, if you don't like it, take it back. It's really that simple. I'm not going to spend $200 on a phone because someone else told me it was the best coolest phone. If I don't like it, then I don't like it. bottom line. Try the phones, keep the one you want. Period! Be happy.
  78. Jim at 1:18pm 3rd August 2010 Obviously didn't bother to take his Galaxy S phone outdoors or otherwise he'd have seen that the Super AMOLED (not just OLED) screen doesn't wash out in the least, and, when compared to the iPhone 4's comparatively small and dimmer screen, there's just no comparison. I use a Vibrant, but it features the same Super AMOLED display as the Captivate and loos amazing, even in full sun.
  79. Mike at 11:21am 3rd August 2010 Of course, none of my previous comment has much to do with the 3 phones reviewed here. Suffice it to say that I'm pleased as punch with my new iPhone 4 (NOT misleading, by the way, since it's THE 4TH IPHONE!). Yes, I put a rubber case on it right away; this was before the antenna issue was known. It just makes sense to protect something that is metal and glass and therefore fragile. So, I've had no antenna issues, although I can reproduce it on my phone if I try. I understand why they write articles like this; surely there are some people out there who don't have a dog in the fight, who just want to find out what the best "bang for the buck" is. It seems, though, that almost everyone posting here decided which phone "won" before reading the article. I'm no exception. If the iPhone 4 (and 3Gs/3G/Original) had never come out, would I use an Android? Probably. But they did, and I like Apple's offerings, so no Android phone is likely to pull me away from Apple's platform for a long time. That's likely true for those who like Android's software, too. So, why not just enjoy the phone you've chosen? It's not like any of the new, top-of-the-line phones are BAD, right? Sheesh!
  80. Mike at 11:07am 3rd August 2010 I agree with the last couple of guys. It ticks me off to no end to hear the fanbois yelling back and forth. That said, I think the Android market will still take a while to catch up to the iPhone and here's why. I'm an Apple developer (don't yell me down just yet), and I'm starting to learn to program for Android, too. (I'm an equal opportunity developer; if you want to give me money for an Android app instead of an iPhone app, be my guest... :) ). So far, the ability to develop for Android is more difficult than the iPhone. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm not saying that awesome Android apps can't be made, but the development environment is a bit harder on the uptake. This may change soon (or even be a bit wrong now), but I haven't yet seen a good way to graphically lay out screens when developing an Android app. Sure, you can do it in code, which I sometimes do on the iPhone, but for a static screen, it's MUCH quicker, easier and better to be able to SEE what the screen looks like at design time, not during a debug. Also, the fact that a screen rotation fully kills your app/activity only to restart it in another orientation seems weird. There are a few other things that I'm learning as I go where I feel like, as a developer, Apple has made my job easier than Android. Anyway, I do think that Android is a strong platform, but, FROM A DEVELOPER'S PERSPECTIVE, it doesn't seem quite as mature yet. Of course, that's something that the average user will never experience. I think, though, that when Android gets these kinks worked out it will be a serious contender.
    1. Sebbbb at 9:50pm 11th August 2010 Have you checked out the Google App Inventor? Not everyone currently has access to it, but I assume its coming. Check it out... pretty cool way to make apps. :) http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/
  81. Uncle_Stan at 7:17am 3rd August 2010 I also don't know what the big fuss is all about here. Here is my 9 months old phone spec: - 9 months old - 800X480 resolution on 3.5in screen (resistive - no multi touch) -TV out - can pair any bluetooth dev (including keyboard) - 5M back camera and 640x480 front web cam - Web cam can do Skype and Google Talk video calls over 3G and WiFi - Cisco VPN Client (this is important for me) - has Flash support in the browser - has actual mouse on the screen (can do hover over on web pages menus) - has Radio transmitter (not only receiver) built-in - GPS and AGPS - the usual - Unlimited (theoretically) client Internet connection sharing (share 3G over WiFi) - no rooting/jail-breaking required to install any app - 32GB internal + up to 32GB microSD storage - over-clockable - good for self-defence :) I guess I can go on and on ... but that's enough to make my point that all 3 phones are still missing some major features that my 9 months old brick has.
  82. b_jamez at 6:42am 3rd August 2010 @ Who Dat I agree! Both platforms are pretty amazing and truth be told without the iPhone I probably wouldn't be holding this sick Android device I'm typing this on. I am definitely an android enthusiast but I can admit there are other amazing platforms out there. Hey, the comments, on my part atleast are in defense of my platform in the name of good old competition. It's like sports and android is my favorite team! There are plenty of great players...plenty of great teams but android is who I'm going for!
  83. Who Dat? at 5:22am 3rd August 2010 I've never been an iPhone user and have always avoided it because it didn't offer enough of the features that I wanted. I just recently received an upgrade and I finally decided to "TRY" the iPhone 4. Being that the line in the store was horrendously long, that allowed me about 30-45 minutes to play around with both the Captivate and the i4. Not surprisingly both phones impressed me and I especially loved the fact that the home screen on the Captivate allowed widgets as well as an animated wallpaper. In terms of browser experience and display both phone were wonderful, but I decided to go with the i4 because of the more natural display, the larger app store, the built-in flash in the camera, and various other reasons. I'm in no way, shape,or form downplaying the Captivate. It is an amazing phone and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering purchasing it. I really don't see what the big fuss is over Android vs iOS. Both are great operating systems and I'm especially impressed with how rapidly Google has been able to expand its market. I understand that there are things that Android offers that iOS does not offer, but at the end of the day, both are amazing software. I chose to upgrade to i4 because of personal preference and that is all that truly matters. Despite all of the reviews and blogs, I made my OWN, conscious decision and I'm happy with it. Also all of the fanboyism has got to stop. Anyone who says anything nice about an iPhone is a fanboy and vice versa for Android enthusiasts. I personally believe that all of the negativity is outlandish and representative of a feeble mind. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and should be able to state them without being criticized or being deemed a "fanboy".
    1. ioman at 4:57pm 3rd August 2010 So...you got a Captivate not because it was better, but because the line for the iPhone 4 was too long? It was long for a reason, the iPhone is a better phone!
      1. openyoureyes at 7:26pm 3rd August 2010 holy crap read his actual post. The line in the store was too long (most likely because he lives somewhere other than a massive metropolitan area, so at&t is the only good carrier) and he bought the iPhone 4.
        1. ioman at 9:38pm 3rd August 2010 Ah, I love how you make things up. So you know he lives outside of the city? I like how you are making excuses for him.
          1. Who Dat? at 10:35pm 3rd August 2010 Actually, I got an iPhone 4, the Captivate's super cool and all, but it's not for me. As far as AT&T being the only massive carrier...NOT TRUE. I live in New Orleans which just so happens to be a major Metropolitan area and carries every major cellular provider as well as a bunch of minor providers.
    2. jason at 7:38pm 14th November 2010 An actual review! he's right, I try yo do my research and I always end up reading an article bashing each other. Its ridicules. Its like Mercedes vs BMW or something. Thanks for the post
  84. Endoran at 4:25am 3rd August 2010 Anyone else notice the captivate only won 2, not 3 like the article says? My captivates in the mail btw, long time iPhone user and the phones are great I'm just really really bored with the OS...it's so...the same thing as 3years ago. And it's pathetic how just recently you can add a background...unless you jail broke it. Anyway it's really stale and I'm so ready for something new, with a sweet bonus to make it new again after I get bored with it. Cheers to customization!
  85. b_jamez at 3:20am 3rd August 2010 If the EVO's advantages aren't already enough, we have froyo coming in a few hours. It's gonna be sick how much faster my EVO running android 2.2 will be than your iphone 4....err i mean your iphone 3.5G!!! ;)
  86. John at 2:50am 3rd August 2010 iPhones are tight...buy you apple users have to get over yourselves and your precious iEverything. If apple polished up a rock and put their little light up fruit on the top you'd get 100million "trendy" consumers running out to get one. All the phones have their advantages and sacrafices, and people just need to decide which one fits them. Reading some of these tweak posts is very entertaining! Thank you for that.
    1. ioman at 3:03am 3rd August 2010 Who are you talking to? I think there are a whole 2 Apple fans that have even responded to any of these comments.
    2. Tony at 2:41am 30th September 2010 Wow, it's people like you who make me WANT to go Apple, stay away from the brain-washed freaks who have to put down everything Apple and don't acknowledge why people love to spend their cash with them (or lump 100million people in to being trendy because they prefer Apple).
  87. John Newsom at 11:45pm 2nd August 2010 And as far as Sprint is concerned I left them five years ago because their coverage is BAD and if you travel you lose signal so much it is impossible to call alot of the times, and check out how many areas are REALLY 4G not to many
    1. Dav at 11:55pm 2nd August 2010 My friend is with ATT, always dropping calls, even in Atlanta where ATT has a majore presense. SBC or BLS was headquartered in ATlanta and ATT merged with SBC/BLS and the rest Cingular. Verizon and Sprint doesn't drop calls that often, CDMA network is much more reliable than GSM. VZ/Sprint can roam on eachothers network. All my friends that have Sprint is very happy with service and coverage, ATT is the most complained network
    2. Dav at 5:26am 3rd August 2010 I left ATT and Verizon 6 years ago, never answer their marketting calls. Verizon used to rob me, ATT used to drop calls all the time.
  88. John Newsom at 11:42pm 2nd August 2010 I took my IPhone 4 back and got the Captivate and it is far superior and I did have a 3GS and a 3G so I have had IPhone for about three years but Apples updates cause all kinds of problems and phone freezes alot the Samsung is faster and the display is way better out in the sun, my IPhones all washed out in the sun the Captivate does not , so all you IPhone lovers just go try the Captivate you will be sold
    1. Manish M. Shah at 9:40am 5th September 2010 Agreed - I switched from iphone to Captivate, and it's soo much nicer. This article just talks about features that iphone4 has, but how many of these features will you truly use on a day-to-day-basis (I'm talking about Facetime/front-facing camera!)
    2. John at 7:13pm 12th September 2010 My story is identical too yours... article also fails to mention the swype keyboard.
      1. Jon at 7:59pm 12th September 2010 Hey man Im really can't decide wether or not to get the iphone 4 or the captivate. I've heard a lot of stories of people switching from the iphone to the captivate and most of them like it. I was just wondering what you guys like about it so much? I really like playing with the swype. Thanks for the help.
    3. Tyler at 3:45pm 30th September 2010 I had an iPhone 2G (original iPhone) and I almost considered getting the Sony Xperia X10, but ended up getting the Captivate. It is one of the best, if not the best phone out there right now!
  89. Dav at 11:23pm 2nd August 2010 @ioman, These are facts: EVO 4G is 8 laptops hotspot, iPhone4 NONE EVO 4G has FM radio, iPhone NOT EVO 4G has HDMI outlet to TV, iPhone NOT EVO 4G has 8mp camarra, iPhone 5mp EVO 4G runs on 3G & 4G network, iPhone runs only on 3G only, has ZEROOOO 4G and can’t run on any 4G network at all. EVO 4G video chats over WiFi and Cell network 3G/4G; iPhone only over WiFi and NOT cell network. EVO 4G can remove battery, iPhone NOT EVO 4G has kickstand, iPhone NOT EVO 4G is 4 times faster than iPhone
    1. ioman at 12:56am 3rd August 2010 So like the article says, on paper the HTC Evo specs are better. In REALITY it's not as good in some areas, like picture taking.
    2. MV ROB at 2:57pm 3rd August 2010 Someone needs to take away your caps lock key. People can read just fine without all the caps lock. Reading your posts is like listening to my 6 year old argue and whine. Both phones are great, I'll leave Samsung out because I cant stand their phones. I admit AT&T has gone downhill but considering Sprint has no 3G coverage where I am, I wouldnt even consider using them. Realize some people dont care about having a kickstand on a phone. More megapixels doesnt mean better pictures, go read any Photography magazine or read any camera comparisons. Its all about the sensors. When you have Pandora and plenty of online radio, not many care about FM radio. I for one dont want FM radio just to listen to DJ's and commercials. Are you really going to connect 8 laptops to your phone? HDMI out is rather nice, I hate proprietary ports from any company including apple but they do have a video connection kit without having to buy a dock. You even cut down people for putting a case on their precious idevice. I hate cases myself but due to my working conditions, I must cover my phone. I even have to put my phone in a ziplock bag to keep the sweat off of it because cases dont completely work. The ziplock bag trick seems to be a growing trend in my line of work. I tend to sell my phones each year, so I would like to keep them scratch and ding free for the next owner. Removable battery? I for one dont like buying any extra overpriced batteries anyways, and just judging from the numbers tens of milions of other people seem to not care either. I am certainly glad I dont have to deal with another broken or lost battery door. Your 4G argument will only last for maybe a few more months to a year when Verizon unleashes their network. Tmobile's 3G network has already proven to be faster than Sprint's 4G and will by the end of the year possibly cover more people. Now notice I have made an intelligent argument without bashing everyone else or their choices in networks or phones. I have been an AT&T wireless customer for 12 years and a Verizon customer for 6 years. Both companies have their advantages where I live. Sprint by far has the worse network where I live. Tmobile passed them up last year when they turned their 3G network on and Sprint failed to do the same. So keep the arguments intelligent and lose the caps please. What works for some people might not work for others.
      1. Nik at 12:31am 5th August 2010 Very nicely put. No need to be hateful people, what works for some doesn't work for others. I have had great experience with AT&T phones. I am trying to figure what my next phone will be, I like the Captivate. I just need to know whether Captivate or iPhone will be better. I am not looking to do alot with it, but to use the internet when away from home is nice, and I like to use the camera alot. Anything else I need to know? I'd like some nice feedback.
        1. Brian at 9:31pm 12th September 2010 Looks like there's a troll here voting down people's comments, even though they aren't on anyone's side.
    3. Mike at 8:20am 29th August 2010 EVO 4G is 8 laptops hotspot, iPhone4 NONE -- Almost everywhere now has a Wi-Fi hotspot. I have Wi-Fi in my house, in my local starbucks, at work, and in my mall. Why would I want to pay extra for that feature when i'd never use that? EVO 4G has FM radio, iPhone NOT -- I have all of my iTunes library on my iPhone 4 and on my laptop. I have an FM radio in my car... where I also have my iPod hooked up. I don't use it. EVO 4G has HDMI outlet to TV, iPhone NOT -- Again... who cares? What's the real life practicality on this? EVO 4G has 8mp camarra, iPhone 5mp -- Hmm... last I checked MP doesn't equal quality. I've taken better pictures with my 10MP Canon DSLR than my 14MP Sony CyberShot point-and-shoot. EVO 4G runs on 3G & 4G network, iPhone runs only on 3G only, has ZEROOOO 4G and can’t run on any 4G network at all. Right. Because AT&T even has a 4G network planed for anytime in the next year. Also... 4G on the East Coast? Non existent. Philly is the closest... but I don't live or work in Philly do I? No. I live in Jersey and work in New York City. Both places dont have that. EVO 4G video chats over WiFi and Cell network 3G/4G; iPhone only over WiFi and NOT cell network. Yes, you're right. It does. Only one problem with that... the quality is pure crap over 3G because it's not a native HTC or Google App. I've used both phones... I know. EVO 4G can remove battery, iPhone NOT -- This is such a null point. I'd rather have my lithium-polymer battery instead of a lithium-ion battery. Stock for stock without paying money to upgrade iPhone's battery technology wins on this one. BTW, my friends EVO lasts maybe 4-4.5 hours of usage and half a day standby. I've clocked my iPhone in at 7 hours usage and 1.5 days standby before I hit 1%. I probably could have had it on standby for another 15 minutes. EVO 4G has kickstand, iPhone NOT -- I don't watch movies on my iPhone (I use it as a phone) so a kickstand is useless to me. EVO 4G is 4 times faster than iPhone -- Same speed processor, same amount of ram... hmm... how is one faster than the other when Android suffers from bugs which make it slower? Try booting your phone and using an app instantly. It reacts like my 3 year old desktop it's still background loading apps... and takes forever to open an app. I open an app on my iPhone right after I get to the home screen and it just works.
    4. sahir at 2:55pm 25th October 2010 You are a loser and iphone owners not. you are comparing that crap with iphone
  90. ioman at 11:02pm 2nd August 2010 I want to point out there there have been less than 250K EVO's sold versus 1.7 million for the iPhone 4. People are not idiots. If the EVO was better, then more people would have them!
    1. goldeneye at 11:15pm 2nd August 2010 Majority of 1.7 million were already iPhone users. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's the best.
      1. ioman at 12:55am 3rd August 2010 So 1.7 million people broke their 3G contract, paid extra and got the iPhone 4? No way.
        1. goldeneye at 1:31am 3rd August 2010 Jesus Christ. You can never discuss facts to an Appledrones. http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/25/77-of-ipho... http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/ana... http://www.cultofmac.com/report-77-percent-of-iph...
          1. Jones at 2:38am 3rd August 2010 So subtract 77% from 1.7million phones and you still have about 400K phones sold to non-iPhone owners. That's double the amount of EVO's sold. :P You lose again.
            1. Eric at 7:40am 6th August 2010 Most people buy the iPhone bc they want to be seen as cool! So, I don't care about how many phones are sold unless I'm an Apple stock holder or work for Apple. Otherwise I could care less about how many phones they sold.
    2. Guest at 3:33pm 3rd August 2010 You are wrong here; in general, people are idiots.
    3. Topgun at 10:26am 4th August 2010 No one knows how many Evo's where sold. 250K was the very bottom estimate. Some go as high as 800K on launch weekend with about 70% new user rate. They would sell a lot more if they could keep up on the demand. Go ahead, I DARE you to walk into ANY electronics/Sprint store and ask if they have any Evo's in stock. Check out ebay and see how much they are going for on there. Sorry Evo wins. Sorry, but that pounds the iPhone numbers.
      1. ioman at 4:09pm 4th August 2010 Actually, lots of media outlets know how many EVOs were sold. Sprint even misinformed analysts and said there were more EVOs sold than there really were. http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/09/sprint-cut... http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2010/06/09/sprint-bun... Listen, I am sure the EVO is a nice phone, but they simply have not sold more than the iPhone 4. Simple as that. Not even close to as many units, not even half. Sorry Maverick, but you lost this one ;)
        1. David at 7:45am 6th August 2010 Who cares about how many phones are sold if you the money from those sales are not going to your pocket. We all know the iPhone has a lot of hype behind and is seen as being "cool". That doesn't make it a better phone. There are something the iPhone does better than the EVO and things the EVO does better than the iPhone. One Tech site rates one better the other rates the other phone better. I would just call it a draw.
          1. anonymous at 3:37pm 27th December 2010 i am neither an iphone, evo, or captivate user yet, which is why i'm researching reviews. i've gotten to the point where my deciding factors are the widgets and the call dropping.... honestly. purchases are simply individual decisions. from the posts here... i think some people (both sides!) would be wise to invest in some relaxation techniques or some anger management reading.
    4. TaVerenTech at 1:12pm 9th September 2010 This is a retarded comment. The EVO is only 1 of MANY choices in Android phones. To do a fair comparision you would need to compare iphone 4 sales to sales of all Android 2.1 and 2.2 phones combined. Also, there was a supply issue due to screen shortages (HTC bought them from Samsung).... And furthermore, most people are idiots.... and apple markets well, winning over the average person. Just because GM sells more Malibu's than BMW sells 650s, doesn't make Malibu a better car.... think before you tweet.
    5. Droid at 2:46pm 6th February 2011 Actually people are stupid. Its the sheep herders that are the smart ones. And u just paid for the isheep app.
  91. Garret at 10:41pm 2nd August 2010 haha are you guys serious? Samsung is a crap company when it comes to phones. Spend your money on one now and watch it be outdated in a month or two. Samsung WILL NOT support your phone with updates. The article is right on that one. If AT&T is what you have, then the Captivate is the best Android phone on that network. The EVO is a joke. Seriously. Who cares about 4G when there is no coverage. Have you guys read the forums out there? Battery life on the EVO is horrendous and there is already a ton of problems with the phone.
    1. Gov at 10:46pm 2nd August 2010 You mean NO 4G COVERAGE AT ATT/VZ, ZEROOOOOOOO 4G COVERAGE AT ATT/VZ. Only Sprint EVO 4G has 4G coverage. As of right now Sprint 4G is in 48 cities and covers about 57 million people. By the end of the year it will have covered around 130 million people and still ATT/iphone will have ZEROOOOOOOOOOOO 4G coverage of any kind. Complaining about 60 million 4G Sprint coverage vs. ATT/iphone ZEROOOOOOOOOOO is Foolish
    2. Dav at 10:58pm 2nd August 2010 Foxconn is a crap company no wander iphone4 cameout icrap Foxconn, the factory where iphones are made is a sucide chamber. Workers have been reported jumping to death, it was all over the news
    3. phasespace at 11:35pm 2nd August 2010 Speaking as a satisfied Evo owner, your comment about the Evo is bunk. From my experience, the battery life is acceptable, I'm able to get a full work day on a single charge with a little left over, and that's with wifi and bluetooth on most of the day. I have friends with iphones that don't get that kind of time with their phones doing the same thing. Still, the battery life could be better, but it is not "horrendous" by any stretch of the word. Yes, there have been a few phones that have manufacturing defects, show me a run of iPhones that haven't had their share of odd defects and your comment might have been substantive. Otherwise you're just picking nits. Get over yourself. If you like the iPhone, by all means continue to use it. I've got nothing against the iphone, but they aren't ideal for me due to Apple's overzealous need to control the device. The point is, if Apple isn't right for what you need to do, there are very viable alternatives out there that are just as good if not better than the iphone.
      1. Dav at 5:21am 3rd August 2010 My friends iphone battery SUCKS, thats an understatement. Try 2 hours sometimes at his iphone, unbelievable.
    4. Eric! at 12:05am 3rd August 2010 Samsung has been crap in the past, but I honestly can't imagine them leaving everyone who buys a Galaxy S, Captivate, Vibrant, Epic 4g, or Fascinate out in the cold. And could you imagine the developing community for that group? Holy crap!
      1. ioman at 12:55am 3rd August 2010 There is a lawsuit out there that says otherwise, read the last paragraph of the article.
        1. Dav at 5:23am 3rd August 2010 There is lawsuit vs AAPL for FRAUD, you heard it right. AAPL/ATT was caught FAKING signal, knowingly sold defective phones, knowingly deleted, frozen iphones that was bought with full price. Did I mention Nokia, HTC is suing AAPL for infriengments
          1. ioman at 5:31am 3rd August 2010 And your point is? I didn't say there were no suits against Apple, just that there is a suit against Samsung because the company abandoned customers.
    5. Topgun at 10:22am 4th August 2010 Really? You sound very much misinformed. 4g coverage is about to overtake ATT's 3g coverage. Also, Apple has never come close to catching up to ATT in the amount of phones sold, and never will. Evo 4g battery issues have been resolved. Yes, if you run 4g it is going to drain faster. But, alas Android to the rescue. See, Android users have this beautiul thing called widgets. They are these little buttons on the home screen were you can customize them to do what every you're heart desires. Tap the screen, turns off/on 4g or wifi or bluetooth. Currently, I can go about 20 hours standby with my Evo, and about 8-10 hours with heavy usage. About 5 hours with 4g turned on. I can watch 2.5 FULL movies on one charge. That just about nullifies everything you just stated. Go back to drinking more of that cool-aid and get back in you're cage :P
    6. Lustwaffe at 9:34pm 1st September 2010 who cares Garret. At least Samsung and EVO dont drop calls due to a retarded antenna. Its a phone, remember?
    7. TaVerenTech at 1:08pm 9th September 2010 A 9 second car gets only 8mpg, but noone complains... just an anology. Seriously though, I was only getting 4hrs on my Evo when I first got it with stock 2.1. After rooting it, and installing 2.2 with deoxed ROM (no sprint apps), and adding app killer for 1 or 2 bad apps, and app startup preventer (keeps apps from starting at bootup...... adjustign the screen to turn off in 1m of idle.... turn off wifi or 4g (who needs both) I now easily get 12-13 hrs on my battery.....
    8. Jason at 12:40pm 27th October 2010 hey my man who you think makes the screens and processors for iPhone and evo SAMSUNG!!! look them up on wiki and watch they own like 90 percent of everything in the iPhone and any other computer you use!!!
    9. Shannon at 4:24pm 11th January 2011 you might need to do some research on the captivate. I have it and it handles updates just fine fyi I switched from the iphone to the captivate and will never go back...
  92. charlie at 10:40pm 2nd August 2010 iphone 4 is clearly the best ..until you actually own all of those phones you cant actually say anything i am using all and i substancially prefer the iphone 4
    1. boooyah at 4:12pm 3rd August 2010 i totally agree. i dont know why they hate the iPhone. you all are bitter LOSERS! check out all the reviews, and most of them say that iPhone is still the winner. WTH haters. you all are funny. really :D
    2. YouFail at 8:14am 7th September 2010 Your argument is spoiled by your inability to spell. Credibility FAIL!
    3. Mike at 9:35pm 8th October 2010 Anyone who completely misses the mark on spelling substantialy does not have the coin to own three different smart phones.
      1. cookie at 9:11am 27th December 2010 You are an idiot, look how many wealthy uneducated people are running around out there. If you think you have to know how to spell in order to own 3 smart phones then you are clearly AN IDIOT.
        1. anonymous at 2:48pm 27th December 2010 absolutely! my husband makes a very decent six-figure salary and cannot spell very well at all.... he relies on spellcheck way too much. and i don't think these reviews/fight boards have that :)
    4. Krik at 2:57am 2nd May 2011 Really? So you're signed up with two two year contracts to ATT and another to Sprint? And you actively use all 3 phones even though the iPhone is "clearly the best"? Yeah, next time you comment at least make sure your comment isn't 99% bullshit.
  93. Posers at 10:33pm 2nd August 2010 Captivate and EVO are iPhone wannabe's. You can lie to yourself all you want to. Haters
    1. Gov at 10:56pm 2nd August 2010 ONly wannabee I see is the iphone for coppying EVO 4G video chat, still can't do it over cell network like EVO can
      1. yoyo at 5:52pm 3rd August 2010 Hmmm.. sorry to burst your bubble, but the iphone can do that too. It's called jailbreak.
        1. yoyo at 5:52pm 3rd August 2010 oh and fring can do that too.. btw
        2. Topgun at 10:17am 4th August 2010 If the phone is so perfect, then why do you need to "jailbreak" it? If its this engineering perfection, then why do you do that? Also, this article doesn't know what they are talking about. With the Evo, you just type the phone number of the person you want to call in Quik and it calls that person. You don't enter their username. Get you're facts right. When the author said that, I knew he was sucking on Jobs kewl-aid.
    2. shasta at 2:26am 3rd August 2010 It's you all who are haters. Just because you're stuck with sucky At&t (watch out for that left hand grip!) and a two year contract on a phone that you have to jailbreak to make it do things that other phones can already do. How many of you 1.7 million kool-aid drinkers are going to jailbreak your phones? If you were satisfied with it out of the box, you wouldn't need to jailbreak, right?
      1. jones at 2:36am 3rd August 2010 Good luck with your 5 cool apps!
        1. Dav at 5:19am 3rd August 2010 Try 100,000 Apps at Android and growing like wildfire. There is no doubt Android will run over iphone like a frait train.
          1. ioman at 4:56pm 3rd August 2010 It's freight train. Learn to spell.
        2. Mr. Rightf at 4:49pm 4th August 2010 No doubt. That is where the Android's fail. But after having had an iPhone since it's debut I am very -very impressed with what the Android can do and how flexible and more manageable it is over the iPhone. It makes me feel like I have a real phone again and not just an over rated iPod that has games and a phone attached to it. As the EVO grows in popularity app makers will start making apps for both platforms no doubt. There's too much money to lose by not answering to the popularity of these other phones.
          1. ioman at 5:17pm 4th August 2010 You are a liar. You do not have an iPhone. These posts are a dime a dozen "after owning the iPhone, the EVO is so much better". haha
            1. lustwaffe at 9:30pm 1st September 2010 you're such a sad little kid. Get a life.
    3. iphonesucks at 8:56pm 15th September 2010 look inside your iphone 4. Oh look, samsung chips
  94. shasta at 10:29pm 2nd August 2010 The EVO beats the other two hands down! Obviously the non-important criteria used stacked the deck against the EVO. Portability???? You've got to be kidding. Even CNET who is notoriously nitpicky did a prizefight between the Iphone and EVO and the EVO came out on top. Get with the program Didigal Trends!
    1. Garret at 10:41pm 2nd August 2010 Learn to spell, no one will take you seriously otherwise.
    2. Guest at 12:05am 6th October 2010 No! Not everyone has the same criteria as you. I had the EVO and returned it because a) It was a brick b) Sprint Customer service is the worst - I had Sprint for ten years, wanted the EVO and decided to tolerate more bad service to get this phone - quickly realized this was a mistake with more customer service problems c) The EVO screen looks washed out and is almost impossible to see when outdoors d) The Galaxy S Captivate ROCKS!!!!! I've had it for a month now. Nothing is perfect - I do miss the combined "cut and paste and wiki" function of Sense on the EVO and Sprint's coverage might be ever so slightly better --- but the Captivate screen and light weight and much smoother functioning highly responsive keypad make it all worthwhile - and so far, T Mobile customer service has been stellar!!!!!
      1. Guest at 12:15am 6th October 2010 Sorry, I wrote this - I'm tired - my phone is the T Mobile Galaxy S (not Captivate:) I know Captivate is the Samsung version of the Galaxy S on another network. Anyway, everyone has to see which features matter most to them. Another thing I'd like to add to my comments (above): The EVO has the charge plug at the bottom of the phone. I find that annoying - it gets in the way. Having the plug at the top of the phone makes so much more sense. ALSO - the BODY GLOVE cover for Galaxy S has a removeable kickstand that WORKS!!!! The EVO kickstand is so ridiculously useless and annoying, I don't know how they actually decided to produce it with that defect. The phone topples over! Awful! The BODY GLOVE has an awesome kickstand/clip combo that also functions as a handle. This phone is such a pleasure - whereas the EVO was cumbersome, heavy and, at least for me, very awkward and tiring in my hand.
  95. goldeneye at 10:21pm 2nd August 2010 "While it looks more vibrant inside, it also washes out easily in the sun, and whites swing toward an unnatural blue. While the bigger size of the Evo 4G and Samsung Captivate might be superior for watching movies, we’re evaluating phones, not media players. The iPhone’s outdoor livability and ultra-sharp text..." The Captivate has a SUPER AMOLED screen and it is MUCH better than the iPhone's display. It doesn't wash out in the sun, I can see everything clearly with the Super AMOLED screen that's what it is built for!!!! DO YOUR RESEARCH WHEN YOU DO A HEAD-TO-HEAD. Also the web browsing is a lot faster on the Captivate. The ONLY reason why it is slower is because it downloads flash on websites. Apple bias ALL over this article.
    1. Garret at 10:42pm 2nd August 2010 OLED displays are awful in bright sunlight. Have you tried looking at one?
      1. goldeneye at 10:48pm 2nd August 2010 The Captivate has a Super AMOLED screen Garret. Not just a OLED screen. You didn't read my post. I can see everything on my screen in direct sunlight with the Captivate.
        1. ioman at 10:59pm 2nd August 2010 Cool. Have fun with your Captivate, can't wait to see what you get in a few months when your phone is no longer cool.
          1. Dav at 11:20pm 2nd August 2010 iCrap is not cool at all. It started to have screen yellow washouts even before it was released. iCrap is not cool at all. It started to drop calls, drop signals even before it was released, the engeneers said that. iCrap is not cool at all. You have to wrap it in a ungly plastic case or rubber case that looks like a 90 year old lady.
    2. Moonraker at 11:20pm 2nd August 2010 Hey Goldeneye - I love your last point that the Captivate is both slower and faster when browsing the web. Saying that it's slower BECAUSE it loads flash still doesn't change the fact that it loads most web web pages slower.
      1. Josh at 11:47pm 2nd August 2010 Actually, it does. With Flash in on-demand mode, Android's browser is faster than iPhone 4's Safari.
        1. ioman at 12:54am 3rd August 2010 Have proof to back that up?
          1. Lustwaffe at 9:25pm 1st September 2010 just research yourself and dont ask for proof. It is a fact. But I have the galaxy and i have to say that super amoled is not good in sunlight at all. However, I have to say, I would rather have a PHONE do what its supposed to: Not drop calls and let me talk. According to this review, the iphone just won due to Apples extensive App library and updates, and Samsungs lack of it in the past. Seriously guys, its a phone at the end of the day. If your antenna is messed up, your phone just isnt a great phone.
  96. Gov at 10:19pm 2nd August 2010 iphone cult is all about lying about the facts and claim false better product. It's all going to come to bad end just as all Lies do.
  97. Adni at 10:17pm 2nd August 2010 Sprint EVO 4G provides much more data, unlimited data vs ATT/iphone limited data and high charges Sprint EVO 4G provides master newer network the 4G and still saves you around $1000 to $1500 per year vs ATT/iphone. By the way Sprint still has 3 times more 3G coverage than ATT. The claim ATT/iphone makes about 97% USA covered, yeaaaa thats 2G, the 10 year old technology
    1. Garret at 10:43pm 2nd August 2010 There are only a handful of markets that support 4G. If you do not live in one, you are hosed. Sprint's coverage otherwise is worse than both AT&T AND Verizon. That's why you get a better deal on data - so they can keep you as a customer.
      1. Gov at 10:53pm 2nd August 2010 Dude, You are so ignorant. In addition to Sprint having the only 4G coverage for around 60 million, 130 million by yearend, Sprint also has 3G coverage 3 TIMES that of ATT. Here is the map for that. What ATT advertises 97% is 2G and fools already fooled fanboys of iphone. http://www.cellularmaps.com/3g_compare.shtml Complaining about 60 to 130 million 4G coverage of Sprint vs ATT/iphone ZEROOOOOOOOO coverage is plain FOOOOOOOLISH. Only iphoners' can be that bad in judgement.
        1. ioman at 10:57pm 2nd August 2010 If Sprint is so much better, then why are there less people on their network than Verizon or AT&T?
      2. jai at 11:04pm 2nd August 2010 Sprint has FREE roaming on the Verizon network. so your point is pointless.
        1. Jones at 2:35am 3rd August 2010 They have to give it away for free to attract customers. Sprint is #3 for a reason!!
          1. Dav at 5:15am 3rd August 2010 ATT would have been #10 if they didn't merge with Wireless division, SBC, Singular, BLS. Thats a lot of mergers to make ATT work. Each of those companies were equal or much larger than Sprint. In fact ATT was going bankrupt, they already reverse split their share. Verizon thats annother story. First, VZ doesn't own the Wireless division 100%, Vodaphone owns near 50% of VerizonWireless. Verizon merged with Belatlantic&Belsouth, Alltell last year $27 billion buyout. It looks like none of them is big on their own, so why the trash talking. Sprint at least has 3 times 3G coverage to ATT, Sprint also has the only 4G network covering near 60 million as of right now, will be 130 million by year end. ATT/VZ has ZEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 4G network
            1. boooyah at 4:06pm 3rd August 2010 LOL at Sprint. i was so close to switching from ATT to Sprint just because of the upcoming Epic 4G..but after seeing all the complaints and the class law suits, man, Sprint sucks!!! LMAO!!!!
            2. MV ROB at 5:34pm 3rd August 2010 Are you and Gov related? Or are you two the same person? By reading all these posts, You two both have a caps lock problem. Different networks work better for different people in different areas with different needs. One network is not superior than any other, it all depends on where you live. Hearing people call other people losers or idiots because of their phone choice really shows how society is becoming. I agree with you that there is too much trash talking going on here and shows an extreme lack of maturity. Your choice of phone doesnt make you better than anyone else. I own plenty of Apple products and have been very happy with them but I dont go around bashing Windows or Linux. I neither bash Android, RIM or WebOS. All are great platforms with their own strengths. Would I personally own an Android device? Probably not, its just not what I want. I for one would really like to see WebOS on a some better hardware and a full touchscreen. Im a big fan of their OS and would like to see them grow.
              1. yoyo at 10:54am 3rd August 2010 Very well said bro
            3. Jortem at 3:29pm 4th August 2010 Sprint is also altering their plans to make tethering an extra $30 and charge another $10 for 4G access, so; $30 data plan $30 tethering, and $10 for 4G access. So thats $70 NOT INCLUIDING whatever talktext plan you may get.
        2. MV ROB at 5:37pm 3rd August 2010 Well where I live they must not roam on Verizon's 3G network. They are the only carrier with no 3G coverage. Carriers usually have different roaming agreements in different markets and regions, not a complete nationwide deal
      3. Mr. Right at 10:49pm 3rd August 2010 Sprint shares network towers with Verizon. So how does it have worse coverage? Why would it create the worlds first 4G network if it had sucky coverage? This author is extremely biased in his opinions which is fine, we all are in some way...right? I think the HTC EVO 4 has a lot of great technology but as all things technology that are making their debut there will always be flaws that need to be worked out regardless of how much beta work is tested. Yes the res is better on the iPhone but the bigger screen, still great res, and awesome technologies built into the EVO make it a far superior phone. iPhone is more popular simply because of it's movement technology (for lack of a more technical description) and the fact that there are sh*t tons more apps!
      4. Topgun at 10:12am 4th August 2010 Also, you are misinformed. Since Sprint and Verizon share the same CDMA technology they share towers. Sprint allows you to "roam" onto Verizon towers for free as long as you have a newer phone that can support Verizon's freq. There-for in all technicalities, Sprint has the best and largest network when factoring that in. This review seems incredibility biased. Granted, I do own the Evo, yet I have to say the Samsung screen does beat the iPhone screen hands down. AMOLED is rated differently than LCD so comparing numbers just isn't practical. But overall if you put the phones side by side, 99% of people would pick the Evo/Droid X screen. The larger size makes a massive difference. Also, the iPhone has a major handicap. You need to put a condom on it to make a phone call. The principle use for a smartPHONE is the phone part. That is an epic fail. I am not biased, I did try the iPhone4 out for a week. I feel very shackled and it feels sluggish when being compared to the high end Android phones. Also, I think the Evo has a more solid feel in the build quality. I have not tried the Captitive yet and anxious to give it a go.
  98. pamir at 10:02pm 2nd August 2010 display : OLED(galaxy s) >> LCD(iPhone4)
    1. Garret at 10:43pm 2nd August 2010 Wrong. The resolution on the iPhone 4 is better.
      1. aatech at 8:54am 3rd August 2010 And why do we care about resolution? As it is, the pixels are small enough you don't notice them on these other phone, so why do these pixels matter? Yes it looks a bit sharper, but the colors aren't as nice and it still gets washed out in the sun. Maybe not as much as OLED, but then again, the galaxy S has a Super AMOLED display, which among other things means it doesn't wash out as easily.
        1. ioman at 4:56pm 3rd August 2010 So a poor resolution but brighter display is better? common now....
          1. Issa at 9:08pm 3rd August 2010 I agree, the resolution on the Samsung is quite amazing, and the difference compared to the iphone is minuscule. I would rather have the AMOLED display. Btw, it is spelled **come on** now.
            1. ioman at 9:40pm 3rd August 2010 OMG I just got caught with a spelling error. And right after I knocked someone else too. Kharma is a wicked b*tch. Issa, wanna go out sometime?
              1. andy at 9:12am 6th August 2010 Yeah the people writing these articles are terrible. All the Galaxy S's have an OLED its a SUPER AMOLED, the first of its kind which makes the sense amazing despite the pixels being lower than the iphones. And its amazing outdoors in direct sunlight and viewing at any angle.
    2. chetoos08 at 7:17pm 15th February 2011 Yeah, dude and it's AMOLED right, so it gets more battery time. Although the battery time on my captivate is relatively short due to heavy usage during the day. But the display has beautiful colors, it's big, and it looks great even in direct sunlight, unlike my moms iPhone4.
  99. mary at 10:02pm 2nd August 2010 I choose as HTC EVO 4G as the winner cause att has the worst phone use plans.. why would i pay 15.00-30.00 in how much internet i use that is ridiculous i wont be payin 120.00 bucks for the sucky iphone 4
    1. Adni at 10:15pm 2nd August 2010 Sprint EVO 4G scores too many points over iphone4 (by the way FAKE '4' marketting gimmick) I really hate it when the media keeps trying to pumpup much inferior product in iphone. Damn thing is horrible in making phone calls and it's supposed to be a phone. EVO 4G runs much faster than iphone, yet this author has the audacity to make fake claims that iphone is faster.
  100. Adni at 9:35pm 2nd August 2010 Stop with the FALSE iphone4 nonsense. Facts support EVO 4G is superior by far. iphone4 fails do do too many functionality that EVO 4G can. EVO 4G is 8 laptops hotspot, iPhone4 NONE EVO 4G has FM radio, iPhone NOT EVO 4G has HDMI outlet to TV, iPhone NOT EVO 4G has 8mp camarra, iPhone 5mp EVO 4G runs on 3G & 4G network, iPhone runs only on 3G only, has ZEROOOO 4G and can’t run on any 4G network at all.
    1. jerry at 11:14pm 2nd August 2010 you evo guys are sensetive! my iphone 4 does all that you mentioned except for the hdmi, and does it much better. the evo is good but still the iphone is the rolls royce of smartphones . calm down and be happy with your evo man.
      1. kevin at 1:59pm 3rd August 2010 Not true, Does your iphone have a removable battery, upgradeable storage capactiy, kickstand, 4G? You said it can do all but HDMI, but you are simply wrong.
        1. ioman at 5:16pm 4th August 2010 Kevin, do you keep carrying around extra batteries for your EVO? I could actually see that since the EVO's battery life is awful. And 4G, there are what, two markets with 4G support. Kickstand? Lame, who wants that built into a phone? It's not a Swiss Army Knife.
          1. xiac at 4:30am 5th August 2010 No but his Evo doesnt drop calls when you hold it in your left and nor require the deathgrip. This review is pretty scewed if it doesnt give far more weight to the reception quality in a phone review. Still im excited to soon be a former iphone customer with its litany of issues that its lovers have manged to ignore or hide from its masses. Looks like i might be giving Samsung their due and proper.
            1. smithj33 at 5:07pm 6th August 2010 Because the reception issue is a non-issue when used with a case. I don't know any EVO or iphone owners who don't have a case. So yes, Apple screwed up, but put both in a case and the iphone is the clear winner. The hotspot service is not free. EVO battery life is horrid. 4G...funny iPhone + Fring = video chat over 3g Removeable battery is way overrated. I bet you will never remove your battery from your EVO. FM is useless since there are a bunch of free apps that provide all you local stations. including AM. 8MP is actually a negative if you knew anything about camera sensors. Larger means more noise on such a small sensor. Fact. 4x faster? Is that a joke? Kickstand? Don't you recall removing the kickstand from your bike. Why? Because it wasn't cool.
              1. nick at 5:02pm 11th September 2010 epic win.
              2. robb at 2:13pm 14th October 2010 You killed it smithj33. Nice work!!! ha...I love your kickstand comment.
        2. guest at 8:56pm 3rd January 2011 That Evo 4G doesn't have real 4G either, just an enhanced 3G that, on average, is slower that AT&T 3G speeds. When AT&T speeds up it's 3G my internet will be running circles around that "4G". Then when I finally get 4G on a phone that supports LTE, I will be incredibly fast.
      2. erin. at 9:18pm 23rd November 2010 haha amen. my iphone's 4 amazing.
      3. Tina at 3:13am 22nd December 2010 if you get a brick and put an apple on the back of it...i think it would sell more than any phone out there...only reason why this phone sells is the BRAND!!! Duhhhhhhhhhhh there is sooooo many phones better and faster than iPhone and it DOES NOT do everything the Evo does...and I am not an EVO person I'm just saying...eff the iPhone!!
    2. Dane at 12:34am 5th August 2010 camarra ? That says it all.
    3. Pedro at 2:52am 24th August 2010 The iphone can run on 4G. When connected via wifi to an Evo.
      1. Brian at 9:23pm 12th September 2010 nice, I love deadpan humor. +1 for the evo
    4. Samsung Captivate at 7:17pm 12th September 2010 I think Nick Mokey has an Iphone 4, I have an Samsung Captivate and doesn't washes out in the sun as the Iphone does.
      1. rye at 2:40am 21st November 2010 samsung captivate does wash out in the sun! i-phone does not that's the real score.
    5. Lucas Powell at 6:46pm 16th September 2010 the galaxy s cheify beats them all it is a hot spot for other wifi devices and dosnt rot in the sun and with a big screen to play with there isnt any compotition the i phone though backed up by apple inc. it dose have the apps on its side me personaly have done my reaserch and play with each phone and its all in the galaxy s
    6. bryan at 11:39pm 17th September 2010 I LOVE IT! i work at apple and i play with all the phones! evo hands down best phone out and not just because i have it!
    7. hooper at 8:54am 13th October 2010 Thank you, this review was a little one sided i bet this person has owned the iphone since its introduction in the cellular world. All of those extra features were excluded from the post.
    8. KOsborne at 6:49pm 7th November 2010 Couldn't agree more. And didn't this review, in the fourth paragraph, clearly state that 'we're reviewing phones here, not.............'! If that's the true case, how is it possible that the iphone4, with no reception, could possibly win this review? Again, thanks for the accurate bulletpoint differences! This review is a sham! Evo 4G, the only Sprint phone rated, wins hands down.
    9. Ipman at 5:36am 22nd November 2010 iPhone with jailbreak is awesome. U guys never reli explore wat the ip4 can do after jb. I can receive email o SMS in any language n still able to translate in 5sec.
    10. no9000 at 7:13pm 7th December 2010 have fun going to specific cities to use that precious 4G network, its not exactly a widespread thing...
