Microsoft has started to roll out a beta version of Skype for Web that works on up-to-date versions of most browsers, including Internet Explorer, Chrome (Windows only), Firefox, and Safari.

As Skype’s Jonathan Watson points out in a blog post announcing the development, the new feature should prove useful for anyone who finds themselves in front of a computer that doesn’t already have the Skype software installed, or if you’re at “an Internet café or hotel computer whilst on vacation where you can’t download Skype at all.”skype for web

However, for now, Skype for Web isn’t quite as straightforward as it might initially sound. First, the launch is limited, with the first set of users offered access to a beta version via an invite when they log in to their account at skype.com.

And second, this beta version requires a browser plugin to get started, and this will remain the case until a Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) version is enabled, at which point it’ll become a truly download-free offering for Web users.

Despite the launch in recent years of many other similar services, Skype remains popular with users — Watson points out in his post that 33 million hours of voice and video calls are made daily on Skype, with the service’s user base believed to be in excess of 300 million.

The Internet-based service launched in 2003 before being acquired by Microsoft eight years later for $8.5 billion.

Windows includes many interesting tools, but if you’re like many people, more and more of your digital life is happening in your web browser and nowhere else. Few social media sites are as popular as Reddit. Regardless of what you're interested in, there's probably a thriving community for you to interact with on the platform. Known as subreddits, these communities are home to topics like gaming, world news, science, movies, and more. If you can't find a subreddit with your particular interest, Reddit makes it easy to create your own Reddit community.

Running a successful Reddit community isn't easy – but the process of starting one only takes a few minutes. Keep in mind that you'll want to keep a close eye on your subreddit to prevent it from being shut down or turning into a wasteland with no users, but running a subreddit can be a lot of fun when done properly. If you prefer, you can also create a private community that only your friends can join, giving you a place to hang out beyond Twitter and TikTok.
