Box office hits and misses: ‘Bourne’ brings back Matt Damon in a big way

The reunion of Bourne franchise star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass proved to be a winning combination at the box office, with the film enjoying the second-best opening weekend of the series so far.

The $60 million debut for Jason Bourne fell just behind the $69.2 million premiere of 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, and gives the fifth installment of the franchise a good starting point for a successful run. The positive score it received from general audiences over the weekend certainly doesn’t hurt its prospects either.

Falling to second place for the weekend was Star Trek Beyond, which took a big hit after last week’s debut and dropped almost 60 percent from week to week. However, both Star Trek and Jason Bourne received similarly positive CinemaScore appraisals (reviews based on audience polling after screenings), so all is not lost for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and both films could have good runs in theaters despite a crowded summer calendar.

# Title Weekend U.S. Total Worldwide Total
1. Jason Bourne $60M $60M $110.1M
2. Star Trek Beyond $24M $105.7M $160.5M
3. Bad Moms $23.4M $23.4M $24.8M
4. The Secret Life of Pets $18.2M $296.1M $395.1M
5. Lights Out $10.8M $42.8M $63.6M
6. Ice Age: Collision Course $10.5M $42.1M $253.7M
7. Ghostbusters $9.8M $106.1M $158.2M
8. Nerve $9M $15M $15M
9. Finding Dory $4.2M $469M $830.5M
10. The Legend of Tarzan $2.4M $121.8M $309M

Two new releases cracked the top 10 for the weekend, with the raunchy comedy Bad Moms taking third place with a respectable $23.4 million and social-media thriller Nerve coming in eighth with $9 million.

Both movies came in slightly under expectations, but still got off to a good start given their relatively low production budgets. While Nerve faces competition from a summer filled with action films and thrillers, Bad Moms is envisioned as a sort of counter-programming alternative to Jason Bourne and this week’s Suicide Squad, so the timing appears to be good for that film in particular.

Speaking of Suicide Squad, the supervillain team-up movie is expected to have a huge opening weekend, with box-office pundits predicting a debut somewhere around $140 million. That would put it in the vicinity of Deadpool as far as opening weekends go, and around $20 million shy of where Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened earlier this year.

If you have to watch one Star Wars movie this May the 4th, stream this one
Luke looking off into the binary sunset before dying in The Last Jedi.

Every Star Wars fan has a favorite movie, and many Star Wars fans also hate at least one of the entries in one of their favorite franchises. That can make the exercise of choosing the perfect Star Wars movie to watch on May the 4th difficult. For all of the love this fan base has shown to the franchise over the years, it's also a fan base that has strong opinions about why one movie or another is worthy of your time.

This May 4, though, I'd recommend watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Almost undoubtedly the most controversial entry in the saga, one that makes some people furious and others jump for joy, The Last Jedi is worthy of your attention, whether you like what it's doing or not. Here are three reasons you should check it out:
Luke gets to live the Jedi legend
