Here is where and when to watch Microsoft's Gamescom conference this weekend

This weekend marks the ninth annual Gamescom Germany. While the trade show is not at the E3 level in terms of showing off and announcing new games, it represents one of the last public get-togethers before the big games rush in the fall. AAA developers and publishers will be on hand, including Microsoft. In 2016, Microsoft ditched a traditional press conference in favor of a Fan Fest event which let gamers take the company’s latest games for a spin before launch. This year, Microsoft will continue on with its Fan Fest, but prior to that, Microsoft will take the stage to offer up some news on its upcoming Xbox One X. Here’s how to watch and what to expect from Microsoft’s Gamescom showing.

How to watch

The action kicks off Sunday at noon (PT). Microsoft will stream the conference on Mixer, which you can download the app for on iOS, Android, or your Xbox One. We also have the stream in this post, so you can keep it right here and watch with us.

On Monday, at noon, a live-stream dedicated to the Age of Empires franchise will occur. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of the original, was revealed at E3 earlier this year. The Gamescom live-stream will give fans their first peek at gameplay. Also hosted on Mixer, you can tune in for the Age of Empires steam here.

What to expect

As far as the Sunday press conference goes, the main bit of expected news pertains to the Xbox One X. Microsoft plans to officially unveil pre-orders during the press conference. According to The Verge, pre-orders for the Xbox One X will be made available following the press conference’s conclusion.

Outside of the Xbox One X and Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, we know from a July update that Microsoft will discuss and show Forza Motorsport 7 and Sea of Thieves. Forza Motorsport 7 is right around the corner with its October 3 launch date, while Sea of Thieves is on the horizon for 2018.

Throughout the rest of the week at Gamescom, Microsoft will let the press and fans play 27 different games coming to Xbox One in the future. While we don’t know what all will be playable, there is a chance some will be discussed during the press conference.

Microsoft beat the FTC. Here’s what the controversial court ruling means for Xbox

You’ve probably heard that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lost its case against Microsoft after an exciting and revelatory trial. On Tuesday, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley denied FTC's motion for a preliminary injunction to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard before its potential completion by July 18. Ultimately, Corley did not believe that Microsoft owning Call of Duty would “substantially lessen competition” in the game industry. It was major win for Microsoft after months of regulatory hoops and roadblocks, but the FTC quickly moved to appeal the decision. This all raises an important question: What’s next?

Over the next week, Microsoft, Activision Blizzard, and the FTC will determine the fate of the gaming companies involved in this acquisition and set a precedent for the future of the game industry. On top of that, Microsoft still has to deal with the next moves made by the U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which wants to block the acquisition due to its impact on cloud gaming. Following the release of Judge Corley’s Preliminary Injunction Opinion, I spoke to two analysts and a lawyer with knowledge of the video game industry to better understand what lies ahead for Microsoft and Activision, the FTC, and the CMA. The battle isn't quite over yet, even if the end is finally on the horizon.
What’s next for Microsoft and Activision Blizzard
Currently, Microsoft and Activision are in a solid position, as a Judge has ruled that Microsoft is unlikely to pull Call of Duty from PlayStation or lessen competition in the game console, cloud gaming, or game subscription markets by acquiring Activision Blizzard. There’s a temporary restraining order in place until July 14, which the FTC hopes to successfully appeal during. As soon as that order is up, though, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have until July 18 to complete the acquisition.

Following a multi-week court case, Microsoft has won its battle with the Federal Trade Commission regarding its proposed Activision Blizzard acquisition. The ruling is a major win for Microsoft's troubled deal, clearing the biggest hurdle it faced.

Last January, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. The blockbuster announcement immediately raised antitrust concerns, which resulted in the FTC filing a legal challenge in December 2022. Microsoft has not been able to proceed with the acquisition since then, as its faced similar scrutiny in the U.K.

Star Wars is once again taking over Fortnite with the brand-new Find the Force event, which brings a ton of new quests, items, and cosmetics to the popular battle royale. If you want to complete the full event reward track and earn all of the skins, one of the quests you'll need to knock out is opening a Republic Chest. Of course, you may want to seek these out each game anyways, as opening them will reward you with a new DC-15 Blaster, which is an immensely strong firearm that has infinite ammo and excellent range. Where to find Republic Chests and what's in them
Republic Chests can be found at three locations on the Chapter 4 Season 2 map. You'll find some located about halfway between The Citadel and Shattered Slabs, some to the west of Slappy Shores, and some by the road southwest of Frenzy Fields. Land at one of these spots and search the white tent-like buildings there for the chests.

Each Republic Chest contains one of the new DC-15 Blaster firearms alongside a selection of random support or healing items. You'll commonly see Medkits, Small Shield Potions, and Chug Splashes pop out, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting prepared for battle from the items you get from the Republic Chests.
