Everything leaving Netflix in May 2025

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum in The Lost City.

Unfortunately, Netflix tends to wait until the middle of the month to announce what’s leaving on the 1st of the following month. Many of the titles departing Netflix on May 1 are great films, including Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Friday, Queen & Slim, and more. There isn’t much time to catch those movies, but there’s still a whole month to make sure you can watch any of your favorite shows or films before they head out the door.

The Lost City, The Peanut Butter Falcon, A Simple Favor, and The Sum of All Fears are all leaving Netflix this month. But if you love superheroes, catch the animated Justice League and Justice League Unlimited series. Both of those shows have some incredible superhero stories with great writing and voice acting. The live-action films have yet to be able to recapture the spirit of the comic books that these shows pulled off over two decades ago.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum team up in The Lost City, a rom-com adventure and throwback to the classic ’80s flick Romancing the Stone. Bullock plays Loretta Sage, a former archeologist who has found her second act as a best-selling novelist. Regardless, Loretta is deeply depressed about losing her late husband five years earlier.

Alan Caprison (Tatum) is the cover model for Loretta’s novels, and he’s secretly in love with her. When Loretta is kidnapped by a deranged billionaire, Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), Alan takes it upon himself to follow them to a remote island so he can rescue her. Fairfax is convinced that Loretta’s research is the key to unlocking the hidden city he’s discovered, and she may need to prove him right if she and Alan ever want to escape the island with their lives.

An AI-generated movie flopped in China despite its budget and Hollywood must take notes
China’s AI-made movie bombed at the box office while a human-made low-budget, animated film struck gold.

China just gave Hollywood a cautionary tale about AI filmmaking. Sanxingdui: Future Past, billed as the country's first fully AI-generated movie, hit theaters on October 23 and bombed at the box office.

According to Futurism, the film's reported $1.5 million production budget landed on more than 10,000 screens. Yet it pulled in only about $181,000, averaging roughly $20 per screen, making the budget difficult to recover.

Grok’s AI-generated Odyssey series is seven minutes of nothing happening beautifully
The landscapes look convincing. The fake Hugh Jackman and Instagram-face amalgamation playing Penelope are harder to forgive.
Uniform ships Odyssey by Grok

Some of the best shots in Grok Imagine’s AI-made Odyssey don’t contain actors. Ancient landscapes stretch into the distance. Close-ups of grimy hands suggest people who have touched something rougher than a keyboard. For a few seconds, the illusion holds.

YouTube’s next big upgrade could make videos use 30% less data
AV2 could reduce the data needed to stream videos while enabling better HDR and multi-view experiences.
youtube-feature-upgrade-TV-4k

YouTube videos could soon look better without eating quite so much data, right? Thankfully, the platform plans to introduce a new video format called AV2 on its web player in early 2027, promising more efficient streaming and potentially fewer playback hiccups on slower internet connections. The big headline is a roughly 30% improvement in compression efficiency over AV1, YouTube's existing video format. That doesn't guarantee every video will use 30% less data, but it could make streaming a little easier on both internet connections and data allowances.

What is AV2, and why should viewers care?
