PS Plus adds three Yakuza games, but no retro titles in August

Last month, Sony announced it would be adding the entire Yakuza series to PlayStation Plus starting in August. Today, the company announced that Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be coming to the subscription service on August 16.

Sony began rolling out Yakuza games on PS Plus earlier this month. Yakuza: Like a Dragon was already added to the Essential tier of PS Plus on August 1, along with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 and Little Nightmares. Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 are part of a new batch of games coming to the service next week. If you’re not subscribed to the Premium tier, you’ll be able to play the next trio of Yakuza titles in the Extra tier.

There are no retro titles coming to the Premium tier this month, which is an odd exclusion considering that classic games are a major selling point of PS Plus. Luckily, we’re getting some notable hits, including Dead By Daylight, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, and the indie PS5 launch darling Bugsnax.

Bugsnax was originally released to original PS Plus subscribers for free if they were lucky enough to have pre-ordered the PS5 prior to its November 2020 launch, as PS4 owners weren’t granted the same privilege. The fact that the game is returning as a PS Plus title is great news for fans who either still have the PS4 or managed to obtain the PS5 now that supply chain issues have let up a little bit.

The last five games that are coming to PS Plus on August 16 are Trials of Mana, Metro Exodus, UNO, Monopoly Madness, and Monopoly Plus.

Animal Well will be part of the PS Plus Game Catalog from day one

Sony revealed the batch of video games that will come to PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog over the next month. The headliners are three new day-one additions to the service, including the already-confirmed Tales of Kenzera: Zau and Dave the Diver as well as Animal Well.

Animal Well launches on May 9 and has caught Digital Trends' eye for being an eerie Metroidvania that won't hold players' hands as they explore. It is also the first game that will be published by Bigmode, a fledgling publisher founded by YouTuber Videogamedunkey. PS Plus Premium and Extra's game catalog had historically been less focused on games coming to the service on day one than has Xbox Game Pass, but that's finally starting to shift. While Tales of Kenzera: Zau comes out on April 23 and Animal Well will be released on May 9, Dave the Diver and the following PS1, PS4, and PS5 games will come to PS Plus' Game Catalog on April 16:

PS Plus Extra subscribers can try two of the month’s biggest PS5 games for free

Both Dave the Diver and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will launch for PlayStation 5 this month, and both will included in PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog from day one.

Dave the Diver will be the first to be added, as its PS5 port launches on April 16. Dave the Diver was a surprise hit when it was released for PC in 2023, standing out as a charming game where players go diving for the seafood they then serve in their sushi restaurant. While it was controversially nominated for best indie at The Game Awards despite being developed by Nexon studio Mintrocket, it's still a fantastic game and well worth your time when it finally launches on PS5 in a couple of weeks.

3 realistic improvements we want to see with PS5 Pro games

As we reach the middle of this current console generation, people are wondering when improved “Pro” versions of consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will arrive. PS5 fans had their curiosity rewarded this week when Moore’s Law is Dead and Insider Gaming leaked the specs of what has become colloquially known as the PS5 Pro and is reportedly referred to as “Trinity” internally at Sony.

The leaked documents indicate that the PS5 Pro will have a similar CPU to the base model that can be modified to run at a slightly higher clock speed, as well as 67 teraflops of 16 bit floating-point calculations, a GPU with 60 AMD compute units and faster memory bandwidth, and more. These are improvements over the launch PS5 model, but it isn’t a console generation-like leap in terms of hardware power.
