Apple Store self-checkout: There’s an app update for that

Apple reportedly has plans to add an update to its retail store iOS app that will allow customers to self-checkout products from their Apple Store locations, according to an unnamed source who spoke with MacRumors. If the rumor is correct, customers who use the app will have their payment processed through their iTunes store accounts.

Unfortunately, the app apparently won’t work for high-end items like iPhones or MacBooks, as those items are kept behind closed doors. But users will be able to walk out of the store with a new pair of earbuds, an iPhone 4S case or a replacement wall charger without ever having to speak with a single soul.

Currently, the retail store app allows users to purchase products and have them shipped to their doorstep — but not buy them in-store. Users can also set up appointments with the Genius Bar or for a “One to One” reservation, among other functions.

In addition to the app update, MacRumors also reports that Apple is updating its online store to allow customers to ship items purchased on the same order to different addresses.

Changes to the online store and retail app should come as no surprise. Apple is planning to roll out a number of changes to its retail operation. The first, which allows users to order items online and pick them up at their local Apple Store, has already begun to roll out to stores in San Francisco and New York City.

The retail app self-checkout update is expected to hit this Thursday, November 3.
