BioWare has been putting an increasing focus on capturing the hearts and minds of community-minded gamers in recent years. The developer known for its deep, largely solitary RPG has attempted to galvanize its sizable fanbase with socially oriented games/cross-promotions like the Facebook title Dragon Age Legends. Now the studio’s parent company, publisher Electronic Arts, is stepping up to increase BioWare’s social presence with the acquisition of developer KlickNation.

The studio, now renamed BioWare Social, officially falls under the BioWare label, gamesindustry.biz reports. “KlickNation’s expertise in building innovative and compelling RPGs for social platforms makes them a seamless tuck-in with the BioWare team at EA,” BioWare co-founder and label SVP Ray Muzyka said.

“We share the same creative values. The new BioWare Social unit will bring BioWare and EA franchises to the growing audience of core gamers who are looking for high quality, rich gameplay experiences on social platforms.”

KlickNation is known for its work on the social titles Superhero City, Age of Champions, Starship Command: Battle for Earth and the recently released Six Gun Galaxy, which actually looks a lot like the old Fallout games.

Anthem is getting huge changes to save the game from irrelevancy
Anthem update version 1.1.0 patch notes Sunken Cell weapon loadout contract mission fort tarsis

To say BioWare's Anthem has been disappointing would be an insult to every other disappointing game we've played in 2019. Anthem was a colossal failure for the studio, with mediocre reviews that questioned whether the studio could ever achieve its former glory. But BioWare is willing to try: The studio reportedly plans drastic changes to the game in an effort to save it from becoming irrelevant.

According to Kotaku, several of Anthem's biggest elements are going to be completely overhauled, either in one large update or in a series of smaller updates. These include the structure of missions, as well as the world itself and the loot. The game has been criticized for the relatively arbitrary loot scoring system, with weapons not varying enough in power compared to those found earlier in the game.

BioWare’s most celebrated role-playing games from the late 1990s and early 2000s are headed to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch later this year. Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2, Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment are all slated for a North American release on September 24. Just in time for Christmas, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition will hit stores on December 3.

BioWare plans to release both physical and digital copies of the beloved games, though a spokesperson for publisher Skybound Games said the physical version won't come with the in-depth manuals or lovingly crafted world maps that were standard with RPGs of that era. The new editions were developed by Beamdog, which worked on PC rereleases of the RPGs.
