‘Shadow of the Eternals’ crowdfunding campaign temporarily shut down, pending ‘new developments’

Both of Precursor Games’ crowd funding campaigns for Shadow of the Eternals will be shut down on June 6, Precursor CEO Paul Caporicci wrote today in an update on the game’s Kickstarter page. Shadow, a spiritual successor to Silicon Knights’ Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, is not dead though. The game will re-launch on Kickstarter “in just a few short weeks” with some major changes, Caporicci promised.

“Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for,” he wrote. “Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6.”

“This doesn’t mean we are going away—far from it. We’ll be re-launching the Kickstarter in just a few short weeks with a reveal of these exciting new developments.”

For a game’s crowd-funding campaign to be cancelled only so it can be subsequently restarted is unprecedented. It may have something to do with the fact that, with less than half the funding time remaining, Precursor has raised less than one tenth its goal (less than $130,000 of a desired $1.35 million). It is unclear how those teased “new developments” might affect the game’s ability to garner backer interest. On the other hand, Precursor may have found a publisher for Shadow. If that’s the case, why would it need to relaunch the Kickstarter at all?

Either way, everyone’s getting a refund. Those who contributed via the original campaign on Precursor’s website will receive refunds via Paypal. Those who used Kickstarter will get their money back in their accounts. In the meantime, the public and backers-only forums and  will remain open for discussions.
