Microsoft To Power Verizon Media Phones

Starting Feb. 1, Verizon Wireless V CAST customers can stream and play back exciting audio and video clips using Windows Media. Using technology from Microsoft, PacketVideo and thePlatform for Media Inc., V CAST customers can enjoy the first-of-its-kind wireless broadband entertainment experience in the U.S.

V CAST wireless multimedia content will be available to Verizon Wireless customers in the Get It Now virtual store for $15 monthly access, in addition to their regular Verizon Wireless calling plan. “Microsoft worked closely with experienced partners, including thePlatform and PacketVideo, to deliver a complete end-to-end solution from the handset player to the infrastructure,” said Neil Sharma, business development manager in the Windows Digital Media Division at Microsoft.

On Feb. 1, Verizon Wireless customers will be able to access V CAST on three new phones: the LG VX8000 from LG Mobile Phones, the SCH-a890 from Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) and the CDM-8940 from UTStarcom Personal Communications. The phones come preloaded with PacketVideo’s media player and content catalog. The PacketVideo player, built with integrated Windows Media playback, features an interface that allows users to rewind or fast-forward streams, download clips for local playback, and navigate between video segments.

The 10 best apps for a second phone number in 2024
OnePlus 5 soft gold with the phone app open.

Having a second phone number can be handy for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you want to separate your business and personal calls, or you want a junk second number that you can use to sign up for services so you can avoid giving out your personal number to so many places. That's particularly importance with the frequency of annoying spam calls and messages that can pile up when your phone number is made public. You might also want a second number to use in situations where you want to be able to contact people occasionally but you don't necessarily want them to be able to reach your personal device directly, like when internet dating or using an app like AirBnB. Whatever the reason, there are many situations where having a number that you can give out which you can make use of but isn't directly tied to your personal life like your main phone number is can be important for safety and security.

While you could get a second SIM card (or even an eSIM), an easier option for casual use is to use an app that lets you set up a second phone line. Whether you're after an Android app or an iPhone app, you'll find plenty of options to get a second phone line, including some which are free to use. We've hunted down some of the best options for apps that will give you a second phone number for whatever reason you need it, and we're sharing them with you below.

Honor Magic V2 RSR unfolded back.

Last summer, the Honor Magic V2 surprised me with its thin and light design. It’s the closest a foldable phone has been to a slab phone. Now, at MWC 2024, Honor has one-upped itself with the Porsche Edition of the device.

The 2,699 euro Honor Magic V2 RSR might feature the same specifications, but it’s even lighter than the regular V2 – at 234 grams. I’ve had it for around three weeks now, and while I’ve enjoyed the experience of having a big screen folded in my pocket, a few things have bothered me.
