Ubisoft’s Child of Light draws inspiration from Japanese role-playing games, the animation work of filmmakers like Hayao Miyazaki, European fairytales, and Playdead’s popular side-scroller Limbo, Ubi Montreal’s Patrick Plourde confirmed at GDC Europe 2013 (via Gamasutra). Child of Light is in development now on the UBIart framework development platform, the same engine that Rayman Origins and the upcoming Rayman Legends were built on.
Child of Light is a 2D side-scrolling game that is broken up by turn-based battles, Plourde revealed during his “Small Projects in AAA Studios” talk. The Ubi dev previously served as a director on Far Cry 3, and his work on this upcoming project amounts to an attempt to focus his efforts on something a little less testosterone-driven.
There’s not much to see yet for Child of Light, though you can take a peek at a snippet of the GDC teaser in a brief Vine from IGN’s Andrew Goldfarb.
