ATI Offers Up New Mobile Gaming GPU

ATI Technologies today unveiled a new notebook gaming focused GPU. The new ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 series will begin appearing in notebooks from manufacturers such as Alienware, Boxx, Eurocom, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Hypersonic, rock, Savrow and Voodoo PC immediately.

The ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 series, said ATI, has new on board technology for enhanced video playback. Other features of this new GPU include new ultra-threaded 3D architecture and ring bus memory controller, fast 3D image quality and full support of Catalyst Mobility to provide access to the latest Catalyst driver support.

“The fact that ATI has had over 70 per cent of the mobile discrete market share for 11 consecutive quarters reflects our commitment to pushing the mobile technology envelope,” said David Cummings, Director of ATI’s Mobile Business Unit, in a statement. “Being a leader is more than just about having the fastest graphics. It’s about delivering advanced performance features that are unique to ATI-such as our ability to support high dynamic range rendering with anti-aliasing at the same time in our Mobility Radeon X1800 series of graphics processors.”

HDR-capable gaming monitors are all the rage these days. Whether they're OLED or mini-LED, it's finally possible to get a really killer HDR experience from your monitor. Until very recently, however, you'd be spending lots of money to do it.

Enter a new wave of mini-LED gaming monitors, with prices as low as $280, that call into question similar-priced monitors that are edge-lit or have no local dimming at all. You'd be right to be skeptical, and even though these new monitors can't compare against some of the best gaming monitors, they're a big leap forward for putting proper HDR monitors in front of a lot more gamers.

Dell has upended its XPS laptop lineup, incorporating the ultramodern design elements of the XPS 13 Plus into new 13-, 14-, and 16-inch models. The new XPS 13 is essentially the same as the XPS 13 Plus, which tops our list of the best 13-inch laptops, and Dell is dropping the previous low-price model.

So, while the XPS 13 can no longer undercut the MacBook Air in terms of price, it has a couple of one-ups over the MacBook Air, providing a more direct counter to Apple's offering.
