What’s happened: Universal Pictures shared a spooky and exciting new trailer for director Scott Derrickson’s horror film, Black Phone 2.

  • In the film’s latest trailer, the Grabber (Ethan Hawke) is heard describing to Finn (Mason Thames) what Hell is like and how it strips a person of their humanity, leaving only their sins.
  • The Grabber then says that he is now a “bottomless pit of sin,” a more evil and dangerous figure than he once was.
  • The trailer also features quotes from critics who describe the film as a “cold-blooded masterpiece” and “the rare sequel that’s scarier than its predecessor.”
  • The trailer’s description reads, “Discover the secret behind the mask.”

Why this is important: Black Phone 2 is a sequel to the acclaimed 2022 horror film, The Black Phone.

  • Black Phone 2 follows Finn and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) as they are tormented by the Grabber’s vengeful ghost following his death in the first film.
  • It seems this sequel will reveal more about the Grabber’s mysterious origins, which should make it a unique installment in the franchise.

Why should I care? Black Phone 2 seems likely to be one of the most popular horror movies of the year.

  • The Black Phone was a critical and commercial success, so the sequel’s many positive reviews suggest that it will perform just as well, if not better, in theaters.
  • The trailer hints that The Black Phone 2 will surpass the original film in terms of scariness, which could attract a large audience to theaters.

OK, what’s next? Black Phone 2 will premiere exclusively in theaters on October 17, 2025.

  • The trailer announced that tickets are now available, so fans can reserve their spots to see Black Phone 2.

Scary Movie 6 returned after more than a decade, and the gamble paid off at the box office. The sixth installment debuted to $55 million domestically, the best opening weekend in the series' history, and went on to gross over $215 million worldwide as of late June.

Ahead of the movie's June 5 theatrical release, Wayans Bros. Entertainment launched a website called Subservient Ghostface, where you type a command and watch the masked killer carry it out on screen. It's a clever campaign that borrows directly from Burger King's famous Subservient Chicken stunt from 2004, swapping the chicken suit for the horror icon Ghostface from Scream.
