Spammers Hit GTA Fans

As Grand Theft Auto IV sells out in stores everywhere, those wanting to get their hands on the game might have been cheered by e-mails offering them the chance to not only win a copy of the game, but also a PS3 console. There was only one catch – the mails were spam, containing malware designed to harvest the user’s financial information. ClearMyMail, a spam-blocking company, has reported that fully half of the spam it’s seen this week has been GTA related. The ones that didn’t contain malware themselves linked to porn sites that did. ClearMyMail’s managing director, Dan Field, said: “Spammers are like con-men – they are the ultimate opportunists and like nothing more than to prey on the susceptible. My advice to anybody who receives these emails is to refrain from opening it, and to wait until they can legitimately purchase the game, even if disappointed by the record sales of this morning.”

Indie poker hit Balatro gets delisted from storefronts after sudden rating change

Balatro, a poker roguelike that has become a surprise hit after being released last month, will get delisted in some regions after a sudden rating change that claimed the game encouraged gambling.

"This is not an issue with the stores themselves, however, a reaction to an overnight change to Balatro's age rating from 3+ to 18+ by a ratings board without any advance warning, due to a mistaken belief that the game 'contains prominent gambling imagery and material that instructs about gambling,'" publisher Playstack explained in a message on X. "Balatro does not allow or encourage gambling -- and we fundamentally believe the ratings decision is unfounded. Balatro was developed by someone who is staunchly anti-gambling, and painstaking care has been taken to ensure that the game does not feature gambling of any kind."

Nintendo fans can dive into Endless Ocean Luminous this spring

A new entry in the Endless Ocean series, Endless Ocean Luminous, was revealed at the February Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. It will be available on Nintendo Switch on May 2, 2024.

The final game highlighted in Nintendo's Partner Showcase was the latest entry in the deep-sea exploration series, titled Endless Ocean Luminous. The trailer invites players to dive deep into an underwater landscape never before seen by humans called the Veiled Sea. Perhaps borrowing some rogue-lite elements, the area is said to be unique on each dive the player makes. While what can change between dives was not explicitly stated, we do see various underwater temples, shipwrecks, undersea biomes, and over 500 species of marine life that are elements most likely to be randomized.

NetherRealm Studios is a celebrated fighting game studio that's brought us tons of hits in both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises. Even with that success, the studio isn't immune from hard-to-impress fans who are increasingly demanding. Thus, the "NetherRealm cycle" comes for all its games eventually.
The cheeky term is one that's been coined by the fighting game community. It signifies when a popular NetherRealm Studios game starts to decline in popularity. What once had fans excited at launch now produces complaints from a bored community that's hungry for more. It was inevitable that the cycle would come for the studio's most recent success, Mortal Kombat 1, eventually. What's surprising, though, is just how fast it's happening.
It's only four months into Mortal Kombat 1's life and the bloody fighting game is already getting pushback from fans. That's not just some whining from impatient players, though; the community has some legitimate grievances this time.

A lacking Kombat
If you want to understand how miffed the Mortal Kombat 1 community is right now, just watch this damning criticism from YouTuber iScreamFGC ,who compares its current state to the early days of Cyberpunk 2077. That's a loaded complaint, but it isn't an outlier. Despite initial excitement over the game at launch, players have begun to point out areas in which it feels rushed now that the honeymoon phase with it is over.
