LG posts record breaking smartphone sales, promises more new hardware later this year

LG’s mobile communications division has had a storming first half of 2014, posting record breaking smartphone shipments of 14.5 million devices. That’s an impressive 20 percent increase over this time last year, and saw the division’s sales go up by 16 percent, which in turn managed to break a nine month run of losses. LG puts its success down to the G3 doing well in Korea, where it was first launched, and a good response to its 4G LTE equipped phones all over the world.

This change of fortune at LG is fascinating. This time last year, we hadn’t been introduced to the G2 or the Nexus 5, and the company was best known in smartphone circles for the Nexus 4. Since then we’ve not only had the G2 and the G3, but the G Pro 2 and the G Flex too. These latest performance figures do come almost a year to the day after what’s looking like a key moment in the company’s evolution; the discontinuation of the Optimus name on its high-end devices.

If you’re excited about LG’s latest products such as the G3, with its Quad HD screen and cool camera, and the G Watch, which runs Google’s new Android Wear operating system, then there’s still plenty to look forward to from the company. In addition to sending the G3 to more countries around the world, LG promises to release a selection of other smartphones before the end of the year.

It doesn’t give too much away, but does mention new entries into the L Series range, plus “variations of the G3, such as the recently announced G3 Beat.” The wording seems to drop the hint we’ll be seeing more phones based on the G3 in the near future, and not just the Beat, but we’ll have to wait and see.
