While opinions are mixed on DC Comics’ lord of the seas, Aquaman has long been a key figure in The Justice League alongside Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. With the character expected to make his live-action debut in Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice and subsequently dive into his own solo movie, Warner Bros. is understandably concerned with making sure he gets the right treatment — so much so that the studio has commissioned a pair of writers to pen two different scripts for an Aquaman solo movie.
Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad are each working on a script featuring DC’s aquatic superhero in a solo adventure, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The “dual track” approach is intended to generate two scripts that can be blended, if necessary, to get the best possible story for the character and eliminate some of the typical rewrites that occur later in development.
It’s worth noting that Beall also worked on an early draft of the original Justice League movie that was in the works prior to Batman V. Superman setting the stage for a new, integrated universe. Johnstad’s involvement is likely due to his past work with Batman V. Superman director Zack Snyder, having co-written both 300 and its recent sequel, 300: Rise Of An Empire.
Of course, Aquaman’s involvement in Batman V. Superman is still entirely unconfirmed, despite various reports that Game Of Thrones actor Jason Momoa has been cast as the iconic hero. It’s also uncertain when any Aquaman solo movie will make its way to theaters, as WB has yet to reveal which projects will occupy the nine release dates it has staked its claim on through 2020.
