Assassin’s Creed movie removed from studio calendar, reportedly pushed to 2016

Fans will have to wait a little longer for the much-anticipated Assassin’s Creed movie, as distributor 20th Century Fox has pulled the film from its original summer 2015 premiere.

The film based on the hit video-game series, which Michael Fassbender will star in and produce, was left without any official opening weekend. The move was one of several made by Fox this week, which also included the announcement of a Deadpool movie and a shift in the release date for The Fantastic Four reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Assassin’s Creed was not going to be ready in time to make its original release date due to scheduling issues and multiple rewrites of the film’s script. However, the outlet indicates (via insider sources) that a 2016 release for the film is likely to happen.

It was confirmed in August that filmmaker Justin Kurzel would direct Assassin’s Creed, reuniting him with Fassbender after the pair worked together on an upcoming film based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The most recent draft of the screenplay was penned by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who provided the script for Ridley Scott’s upcoming film Exodus: Gods and Kings.
