The first trailer for Avengers: Age Of Ultron seemed to indicate that the superhero team’s adventure this time around wouldn’t be confined to a major city, and that their battle with the evil android villain (and his clones) would take them far abroad. According to writer/director Joss Whedon, not only is that true, but the wide-reaching scope of the film plays into the central theme of The Avengers sequel.

“This is a very global film. We wanted the world perspective on the Avengers and what they’re doing and what they’ve been doing and who they are,” explained Whedon during an interview on Marvel’s “The Watcher” webseries.”That’s a global thing and it doesn’t make everybody love them. So we wanted to see both sides of that.”

“[We shot] up in the Italian Alps. We were in Seoul, Korea. We were in Johannesburg. We shot a little in Bangladesh. And then all over England,” he added.

“But weirdly,” he joked, “the whole film takes place in Cleveland.”

Principal shooting has wrapped for Age Of Ultron, but Whedon confirmed he’s still hard at work on post-production for the film, which is expected to have more VFX shots than any Marvel Studios movie so far. ”

“Now I just have to jumble them around so it seems to make sense,” he laughed.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron hits theaters May 1, 2015.
