Chevrolet announces Colorado ZR2 off-road concept at 2014 LA Auto Show

Yes, you’re seeing double: Chevrolet has announced two new concepts for the 2014 LA Auto Show.

While the first was a laser-boosted racecar from the future, the automaker’s second concept is a beefed-up pickup for the dirt.

Die-hard Chevy fans (or those with a good long-term memory) may remember the ZR2 moniker from the 2009 SEMA Show, where the American brand showcased a Silverado concept with bolstered suspension and a more powerful engine. Chevrolet also used the name for an off-road/suspension package for 1994 to 2006-era S10s and Blazers.

The latest member of the ZR2 family, the Colorado ZR2 Concept, is based on the 2015 Colorado (pictured) and follows a similar rugged theme. The truck’s stance is four inches wider than a standard Z71, and the bumpers have been redesigned to present forgiving approach and departure angles during off-road driving. The fascias grant angles of 30.7 and 22.7 degrees, respectively.

“From the bold stance to the trail-ready special equipment, the Colorado ZR2 is all about the fun of driving where the pavement ends – and doing it in characteristic Chevy style,” said Tony Johnson, Colorado marketing manager. “Chevrolet has a heritage of the ZR2 representing the ultimate in production-based off-road capability and we’ll gauge the public’s interest in this concept as we continue to explore the possibilities for the all-new Colorado.”

Because off-roading is the purpose of this concept, the ZR2’s capabilities go a lot further than just retooled bumpers. The pickup features electronic-locking front and rear differentials, knobby tires (with custom fender flares to match) and mono-tube coil-over shocks.

The ZR2 Concept is also equipped with GM’s new 2.8-liter Duramax diesel, which produces 181 horsepower and a whopping 369 pound-feet of torque. The engine is hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission.
