ZiL’s fittingly frightening armored personnel concept could be Russia’s future Humvee

If this Russian Humvee concept looks like a futuristic tractor to you, you’re not far off.

ZiL, the manufacturer of the angular combat vehicle, got its start in 1916 building 1.5-ton Fiat trucks. In the years since, the Moscow-based automaker has produced agricultural vehicles, military transports, and even propeller-powered aerosani snowmobiles.

The aptly named EnglishRussia reports that the Humvee concept, which has yet to be named, could be headed for Russian military service as soon as next year.

Adventurous would be one way to describe the styling, with the aesthetics of a 1980’s science fiction prop and the silhouette to go with it. Of course, looks don’t matter on the battlefield, so what really matters is how it performs.

The concept is reportedly based on the U.S. Humvee chassis (although it features radically different design language), with an antiquated 4-cylinder Cummins diesel providing 185 horsepower. It carries 10, has six video cameras to eliminate blind spots, and can utilize its two rear seats as gunner platforms with a weapons hatch nearby.

Despite the space-age look, the 4.5-ton vehicle equips some serious outdated technology, such as large, exposed windows, drum brakes, and leaf springs. That’s not exactly Batmobile tech.

It does look pretty neat though, with the blast-deflecting armor looking mighty intimidating, albeit a bit thin, from some angles.

Clearly, this is only a prototype, so ZiL has plenty of time to get this beast combat ready. Plenty of the components could be switched out or upgraded by the time it gets its camo paint.

You may have heard the ZiL name before in reference to the brand’s position as Vladimir Putin’s personal transportation provider. His high-end limousines typically feature luxurious, Maybach-style cabins, armor plating, and are usually produced in extremely limited qualities.

And from the inside, it seems like the Cold War never ended.

Sure, the R2 isn't cheap -- but it's a whole lot cheaper than most other EVs out there, especially when it comes to SUVs. But Rivian isn't the only company trying to tackle the problem of the budget electric SUV. The Kia EV9 is finally available, and it too offers a modern design and a range of helpful features.

Given the fact that the Rivian R2 and Kia EV9 are two electric SUVs in a similar price range, you might be wondering which is better for your needs. That's why we put the Rivian R2 and the Kia EV9 head-to-head.
Design
Both the Rivian R2 and the Kia EV9 are actual SUVs -- not crossovers pretending to be SUVs, like plenty of other EVs out there. The two vehicles offer big, boxy designs and plenty of interior space, making them excellent options for families or those who need that extra storage.

Rivian R2 vs R1S: How will Rivian’s cheaper SUV compare?
The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.
