Ryan Reynolds confirms Deadpool deal with chimichangas and bullets

The Deadpool solo movie has traveled a rocky road to production, but one constant has been the expectation that Ryan Reynolds would reprise the role of Wade Wilson that he played so well in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (for half the film, anyway). That casting was seemingly confirmed this week via a new report and the actor himself, who hinted at the deal being done in a very Deadpool-like manner.

In a December 4 post to Twitter (see below), Reynolds offered up an image of Deadpool created out of spent ammunition with the caption “Uh… It’s Chimichanga Time.” And as any Deadpool fan will tell you, the mouthy Marvel mercenary’s fondness for deep-fried burritos is well documented — and they have occasionally served as the inspiration for his battle cries as he dives into whatever ridiculous conflict he finds himself in during his comic-book adventures.

And more importantly, the post serves as a reminder that Reynolds gets Deadpool.

Just in case that wasn’t enough confirmation, however, Deadline reiterated that the casting deal is almost finalized for Reynolds to play Deadpool in the previously announced solo movie that’s expected to hit theaters February 12, 2016. The project will be directed by Tim Miller, based on a script by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

A wise-cracking mutant mercenary whose attempt to replicate Wolverine’s healing ability left him horribly scarred, Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza and debuted in a 1991 issue of the New Mutants comic-book series.

Production is expected to begin on Deadpool in March, with the film re-establishing the character after his controversial (half-good, half-bad) debut in 2009’s X-Men Origins.

7 best 1990s crime movies, ranked
Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential.

The crime genre has been alive since cinema's inception. Like most other film genres, crime is at its best when exploring new and different themes, pushing boundaries, and defying conventions and expectations. It's also great when combined with other genres, especially thriller and drama, although unexpected combinations with romance and sci-fi have also birthed unexpected classics.

Reaching new heights during the New Hollywood wave, it saw a new rebirth during the 1990s, thanks to the rise of independent cinema. Crime movies from the '90s are gritty, aggressive, sexual, explicit, and refreshingly daring, true subversive works of art that have stood the test of time. Many great crime movies came out during this pivotal decade, but these are among the absolute best, genuine modern gems that perfectly represent the genre.
