Ridley Scott’s screenplay for The Martian went into space

Chalk this up as one promotional campaign that’s going to be difficult to repeat: Ridley Scott has sent a page from the screenplay for his upcoming film The Martian into space.

The title page from the Alien director’s next film hitched a ride aboard the maiden voyage of NASA’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, a capsule that’s intended to enable a four-person crew to carry out missions to Mars, during a December 5 test flight 5,600 miles above Earth’s surface. The title page features a sketch by Scott of main character Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon in the film) on the surface of Mars, stating, “I’m going to science the shit out of this planet.””NASA really rolled out the red carpet for us,” explains The Martian executive producer Aditya Sood. “In the capsule they had some personal objects that were important to people involved in the Orion project and one of the things was Ridley’s drawing on the cover page of The Martian script. This is a movie about people who are really passionate about science and space-travel, so that was a really great moment for us.”

Based on Andy Weir’s 2012 novel of the same name, The Martian casts Damon as an astronaut who’s abandoned on the surface of Mars and must use his ingenuity and stubborn perseverance to survive on the planet’s surface. Along with Damon, the film features Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, and Chiwetel Ejiofor in supporting roles.

The Martian is scheduled to hit theaters November 25, 2015.

Gladiator is on Netflix in October. Does it still hold up?

Ridley Scott's epic historical drama Gladiator remains one of the best films in his long and prestigious career. Russel Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who earns the favor of the ailing emperor Marcus Aurelius. However, he is betrayed by the emperor's jealous son, Commodus, who kills Marcus Aurelius and sizes the throne of Rome. After escaping arrest and discovering his family has been murdered by Commodus' men, Maximus is sold into slavery, becoming a renowned gladiator in a quest to avenge his family and kill Commodus.

Gladiator won the Best Picture Oscar at the 2001 ceremony, with Crowe winning Best Actor. The film has aged like fine wine, with many considering it among the best of the 2000s. It successfully reinvented the sword-and-sandal genre and revitalized mainstream interest in ancient Greece and Rome. Moreover, it heavily influenced the historical genre in the new millennium, setting the standard for what was to come. Gladiator is back on Netflix in October, which, coupled with the already-announced sequel starring Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal, should be reason enough for fans to want to check out this timeless gem. And they should, for Gladiator is an epic, riveting, cathartic movie; there are plenty of reasons to watch it, but here are three that should be more than enough.

5 movies we can’t wait to watch in late 2023

The summer movie season may be officially over, but as certain die-hard cinephiles already know, the final months of this year already look very promising.
