New ‘Friday the 13th’ game aims to redeem the 1989 NES blunder

A new game based on the classic Friday the 13th slasher film franchise is under development for release in October 2015, according to EGM. Similar in concept to Turtle Rock Studios’ upcoming Evolve, the game centers around a mix of cooperative and competitive play in which a group of survivors takes on the machete-wielding, hockey mask-wearing psychopath, Jason Voorhees.

Tentatively called Friday the 13th, the game is currently in development by an unannounced, “experienced game studio” for multiple, unnamed platforms, aiming for an October release. This is the first video game adaptation of the popular horror franchise since the 1989 Nintendo Entertainment System game, which has frequently appeared over the years on lists alongside E.T. for the Atari as one of the most notoriously bad games of all time.

“With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form,” explained Sean S. Cunningham, who directed the original, 1980 film. “We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect.”

The game promises to dig into the lore of the original films while also tying in to the upcoming television series, for which Cunningham has returned to the franchise as a producer. Survival horror games took center stage in 2014 with releases like Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within and Alien: Isolationand the extensive buzz around  the mysterious P.T. interactive trailer for an upcoming Silent Hill project. Combining that renewed interest in the genre with the widely-hyped gameplay of Evolve seems like a natural progression, and Friday the 13th is a known franchise to ground the concept.

The Steam Machine launch hasn’t even happened, but the resale circus has begun
Scalpers are already trying to cash in on Valve’s Steam Machine
Valve Steam Machine Featured Design Coverplate

Valve has started sending out reservation emails for the Steam Machine ahead of its June 30 launch, and scalpers have wasted no time turning the whole thing into a comedy act.

The Steam Machine is already an expensive device, as RAM and SSD prices have made hardware pricing miserable across the industry. Valve has previously said it would like to lower the price if component costs improve. That makes the resale listings even harder to take seriously, because the official price was already higher than many people expected before scalpers added their own fantasy tax.

Valve Branding on the Steam Machine

When Valve finally revealed the Steam Machine's $1,049 starting price, the reaction was almost unanimous: the hardware looks fantastic, but the price hurts. Now, the company has confirmed what many gamers suspected all along: it never wanted the Steam Machine to cost this much in the first place.

Valve says the Steam Machine wasn't meant to cost this much

Don’t breathe easy just yet. Apple and Microsoft aren’t done with price hikes.
Xbox and Apple device price hikes could be a warning for the rest of the tech industry.

Earlier today, Microsoft raised the price of its Xbox consoles by up to $150 in the U.S. Just a few hours before that, Apple announced a similar move for its Mac and iPad portfolio, while also raising the sticker price of its Vision Pro headset and several other products except the iPhone. But it seems these two giants are not done with price hikes yet.

Neither company has explicitly said that more price hikes are coming, but their statements suggest otherwise. Take, for example, this statement that Apple shared with The Washington Post earlier today.
