Rumors of a return to the screen for The X-Files have been circulating for a while now, but Fox execs added some official confirmation to those reports over the weekend.

During the network’s presentation at a Television Critics Association event, Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman said he was “hopeful” about the series’ return in some form. While he couldn’t offer up too many details about the series’ potential return, he indicated that the network would like to bring back David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to reprise their iconic roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully

Created by Chris Carter and running for 202 episodes from 1993-2002, The X-Files became a cultural touchstone of the ’90s and earned more than 20 Emmy nominations during its nine-season run. It also spawned two feature films, a spin-off series, and assorted comic books, video games, and prominent pop-culture parodies.

Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden later added that discussions regarding the series have so far centered on the availability of Carter, Duchovny, and Anderson for such a project. What form any return for the series will take (such as a miniseries, television movie, etc.), however, remains undecided.

These shows are Netflix's best efforts that actually got to enjoy a full life cycle, receiving more than five seasons. None might come close to the 100-episode mark, but these beloved series prove to hopeful showrunners everywhere that there is indeed life on Netflix after season 5.
