Land Rover proves pipe dreams come true, confirms the Range Rover Evoque Convertible

We suspected Land Rover had new Evoque in the pipes, but we meant that figuratively, not literally. While it’s been focusing on the more rugged side of things with its launch of the Discovery Sport, Land Rover has been cooking up a more domestic surprise, officially revealing the new Ranger Rover Evoque Convertible today by sending it through an obstacle course deep underneath London.

The new drop-top evoque, still camo-clad for testing, tested its mettle through the Crosstrail tunnels underneath London. The 26 miles of tunnels, still under construction, will connect areas to the east and west of the capital to places throughout the city such as Heathrow Airport, Canary Wharf, and the West End. These gave the Land Rover engineers a unique opportunity to test the Evoque Convertible out of site of the public, tackling different obstacles while traversing a 6.2 meter diameter tunnel.

This marks the second time Land Rover has sent the Evoque down the tubes, as back in 2011, the five-door Evoque was driven through the Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool, the first tunnel to ever be bored underneath a major city.

Details of the new Range Rover Evoque Convertible are minimal, as Land Rover plans to announce them later this year. What we do know is that the convertible will be built in the same Halewood plant in England, alongside the Evoque five-door and Evoque coupe.

BlackBerry will provide cybersecurity for future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles
jaguar land rover and blackberry expand tech partnership

In 2018, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and BlackBerry announced a partnership that would see BlackBerry tech used in future JLR vehicles. The original scope of the partnership included a next-generation infotainment system, but now the two companies have expanded it to include other new tech.

A BlackBerry press release said the company would provide JLR with artificial intelligence (A.I.) and machine-learning tech for future vehicles. BlackBerry was light on details about how this tech would be used, only noting that "predictive software maintenance" and "cybersecurity threat protection" were among the possible applications.

Jaguar Land Rover is developing this amazing 3D head-up display
jaguar land rover developing immersive 3d head up display

Head-up displays have become a common feature in cars, usually showing basic information like speed or navigation directions. But Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sees more potential in the technology. The British automaker is developing an elaborate 3D head-up display that can show drivers important safety information, or let passengers watch a movie. It's unclear if the display will go into production, though.

An elaborate in-car display might sound distracting, but JLR claims it could actually improve safety. The 3D head-up display could be used to show hazards up ahead, and help counteract the effects of poor visibility, according to the automaker. Navigation directions and other messages could also be projected onto the road ahead, according to JLR, placing them where the driver should already be looking. Studies conducted in Germany have shown that stereoscopic 3D displays can help improve driver reaction times, JLR claims.
