Why stop at just an SUV? Bentley’s upcoming Bentayga could go topless in the future

Bentley may be planning to get more out of its upcoming Bentayga SUV than previously expected. It looks like the brand plans to follow up a few things based on this platform shortly after the 4×4 comes to market.

The folks at Top Gear magazine caught up with Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer and asked if the luxury automaker has any plans to make a “coupe” variant of the Bentayga; something that would be on par with the BMW X6.

I could imagine we go in a similar direction,” Dürheimer said. “The SUV segment offers a lot of possibilities for derivatives. They go from long-wheelbase versions to two-door SUVs… or convertibles.”

It’s that last suggestion that probably gives everyone reason to pause. Apart from the much maligned Nissan Murano Cross Cab, there aren’t many manufacturers willing to drop the top of their utility vehicles.

“I know what I’m talking about,” he said, possibly in response to the silent stares he’d received. “… because I built an SUV convertible in the past, in another company. We drove it at night-time only.”

Maybe he’s on to something. Range Rover has recently teased us with a production model of a convertible Evoque, so it’s not crazy to surmise that going topless is the next trend for luxury SUVs and crossovers.

Beyond the possible conversion of the Bentayga, Dürheimer eked out a few details about what to expect from the upcoming luxury people mover. “I think we can have a crossover made out of a Bentley SUV that will be very attractive, and incorporate the usability of a Bentagya… and the styling of a EXP 10 Speed 6,” hopefully hinting that the final product will look less than a swollen Mulsanne and more of an original design. Whatever Bentley has in store for us, we’re eager to see it.

The Tesla Model Y is at its lowest price yet — but should you buy one?
Tesla Model Y

Despite increased competition in the space, the Tesla Model Y is still one of the best EVs out there. It has access to the best charging network, plus it offers among the best software experiences, as well as a solid range, especially in the longer-range models. And the Model Y is now down to its lowest price yet, meaning that if you were considering getting one, now is probably the time to buy.

The base price of the Tesla Model Y is down to $42,990 at the time of this writing, which represents a pretty huge price cut. That's before any tax incentives too -- and considering the car is eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, that means you could get it for as low as $35,490.

Here’s how EVs charge as they drive on a stretch of Michigan road
Tech of the Week Electreon

Charging remains one of the biggest hurdles for mass EV adoption. Public charging infrastructure still isn’t extensive enough to merit driver confidence, and even the fastest chargers still require lengthy stops compared to refueling a gasoline car. But the State of Michigan and Israeli startup Electreon hope to prove that EVs can charge as they drive.

As detailed in a recent CleanTechnica explainer, the Michigan Department of Transportation is demonstrating in-road wireless charging hardware from Electreon on a quarter-mile stretch of 14th Street in Detroit. It’s being billed as the first such roadway in the U.S.
