McLaren honors 2014 Nurburgring 24 Hours lap record with special edition 650S Spider

It’s been a little while since the 2014 24 Hours of Nurburgring race, but McLaren and Doerr Motorsport have finally produced a special edition McLaren 650S Spider to celebrate when McLaren GT factory driver Kevin Estre set a record lap of 8 minutes and 10 seconds around the Nordschleife.

Estre’s lap in McLaren’s 12C GT3 was 6 seconds faster than the previous lap record in that racing category. Unfortunately, none of Doerr Motorsport’s 12C cars completed the race.

McLaren has decided to focus on the positive, however, and has revealed the 650S Spider Nurburgring 12H Edition (which would have been developed sooner if not for higher priority projects like the 570S introduction).

The 24H Edition 650S Spider will be limited to just eight units, each with Doerr Motorsport wheels and exhaust, MSO (McLaren Special Operations) carbon fiber rear diffuser, side blades, and front splitter, orange brake calipers, special lap time plaques, MSO’s carbon fiber interior package, Alcantara black seats, and orange stitching and seat belts. It’s unclear if all eight models will be produced in the same white exterior color as pictured.

Under the hood, the 650S Spider’s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine still produces 641 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Pricing for this ultra-exclusive special edition has not yet been announced, but considering the changes are mostly part of Mclaren’s Special Operations customization packages, don’t expect a massive premium over the standard 650S Spider.

The front three-quarter view of a 2022 Rivian against a rocky backdrop.

Rivian has finally unveiled the R2, its long-awaited attempt at a more affordable electric SUV. The new vehicle may not be available just yet, but fans of Rivian's design aesthetics and feature set are already looking forward to being able to order the new car. The R2 is targeted at being a more affordable take on the electric SUV and will sit alongside the flagship-tier R1S.

Let's get this out of the way right now: The R1S is most likely going to be a better vehicle than the R2. Rivian isn't replacing the R1S with the R2 — it's releasing the R2 as a more affordable alternative, and there will be some compromises when buying the R2 over the R1S.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N drifting.

We’re finally getting to the fun part of automakers’ methodical quest to replicate their lineups with electric cars.

Performance versions of ordinary cars have been a staple of the auto industry for decades. But while we’ve already seen some variants of EVs boasting more power and more impressive stats — think Tesla Model S Plaid or Lucid Air Sapphire — the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first to truly apply that format to an EV.
