Troll dolls are making another resurgence. The simultaneously ugly and cute dolls, first popularized in the 1960s and then again in the 1990s, are coming to the big screen this year to take viewers on a “hair-raising adventure.” The first international trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls was released Thursday, providing a glimpse at what to expect from the upcoming animated comedy, which features the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick.
The teaser showcases the colorful creatures, especially their recognizable bright hair and their equally colorful dance moves. The plot seems like more of an afterthought in the preview, but viewers do get a chance to meet the funny-looking animated trolls as they do the Tootsie Roll, and the Whip and Nae Nae. “They sing, they dance, and have lots of fun,” we’re told in voice-over.
The fun is evident in the high-energy preview, but there’s also a hint of danger to come. A much larger creature appears toward the end, snatching up an unsuspecting glittery little guy for a snack. Apparently, the trolls “aren’t just delightful, they’re delicious.”
While a whole gaggle of trolls is seen in the trailer, two will be the focus of the flick: Princess Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) and hardcore survivalist Branch (voiced by Timberlake). They’ll end up on an epic adventure together, complete with lots of songs. Although the trailer relied on already well-known hits, Trolls will include new music from Timberlake, who also acted as executive music producer.
The voice cast includes numerous other notable stars, including musician Gwen Stefani and comedians Russell Brand and James Corden, among others. The comedy is directed by Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, who previously worked together on Shrek Forever After.
Trolls is scheduled to open in theaters on November 4.
