CBS shows off 'MacGyver,' 'Star Trek,' and more new fall TV series

As frustrating as this time of year can be if your favorite TV show gets axed, the silver lining is that cancellations make room for new programming. CBS served as a prime example recently when it ordered five new series for the 2016-2017 season, ranging from a MacGyver remake to a Star Trek revival to Joel McHale’s latest comedy, The Great Indoors. Wasting no time, the network today releasing a teaser for Star Trek, and trailers for MacGyver, Training Day, and more.

The MacGyver trailer is nothing if not action-packed, as fans of the original would expect. Set to premiere this fall, the series centers on the ever-resourceful Angus “Mac” Macgyver (played by Lucas Till) and his missions with former CIA agent Lincoln (George Eads). The preview features quick thinking, clever solutions, and narrow escapes.

With Star Trek not due to premiere until 2017, the teaser doesn’t give much away. However, it does promise a “new adventure” with “new crews, new villains, new heroes, [and] new worlds.”

An adaptation of the 2001 film, CBS’ Training Day series follows young police officer Kyle Craig (Justin Cornwell) after he’s partnered with a morally ambiguous veteran detective, Frank Rourke (Bill Paxton). The two clearly don’t see eye-to-eye in the trailer.

Joel McHale’s latest comedy, The Great Indoors, comes to CBS this fall. He stars as Jack Gordon, a well-known adventure reporter who ends up in charge of a group of eager millennials working in an outdoor magazine’s digital department. There, he finds an entertainingly frustrating generation gap.

CBS has still more shows coming as well, including Bull, a drama starring Michael Weatherly; Pure Genius, a medical drama; Kevin Can Wait, a comedy featuring Kevin James; Matt LeBlanc’s new comedy Man with a Plan; and Doubt, starring Katherine Heigl.

MCU’s Fantastic Four: release date, trailer, cast, plot
The cast of "The Fantastic Four."

It's not a coincidence that one of the first Marvel movies announced after Disney purchased 20th Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2019 was a new reboot of The Fantastic Four. In 1961, Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby launched the Marvel Universe as we know it with Fantastic Four #1, and it was the comic that set the tone for everything that came after.

Because the rights to the Fantastic Four were tied up at Fox for the better part of two decades, FF supporting players like Silver Surfer were withheld from the MCU. Now that the characters are firmly under Marvel Studios' control, the sky's the limit for the upcoming reboot. And we're here to share everything we know about The Fantastic Four so far.
Who has been cast in The Fantastic Four?

The 50 best shows on Netflix in May 2024
Jeff Bridges in A Man in Full.

Netflix keeps such a regular schedule of updates that there's not much difference in terms of new content between the beginning of the month and any other week. To kick things off in May, Netflix has debuted David E. Kelley's adaptation of Tom Wolfe's novel A Man in Full, while also adding the supernatural thriller Evil.

Neither of these series have broken into the list of the most popular shows on Netflix yet. But that could change by the end of the weekend, especially since A Man in Full is the first Netflix original of the month. Thankfully, it won't be the last, as more new shows are on the way in May. And you can keep up with all of them by checking back every Friday as we update our list of the best shows on Netflix right now.
