AMC is ready to work with Bob Odenkirk yet again. The network announced Monday that it is developing a six-part miniseries based on late journalist David Carr’s memoir, The Night of the Gun, with the Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad star set to star and executive produce, according to Variety.

A lauded writer with an impressive career, Carr reported on his own private life in The Night of the Gun, even interviewing people close to him. The memoir, published in 2008, delved into his two decades of drug use, among other experiences. The adaptation is being penned by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Eileen Myers.

“I read David’s story, The Night of the Gun, when it came out and was wildly entertained by his saga. It’s a story of survival filled with pain, crack, journalistic righteousness, abandoned cars, crooks, lies, and then there’s the two little girls who saved his life,” said Odenkirk in a statement. “I hope to do justice to David’s intellect and his scrappy nature. It’s gonna be crazy … if we do it right.”

Joel Stillerman, AMC and SundanceTV’s president of original programming and development, also highlighted the memoir’s many strengths, calling it “simultaneously heartbreaking, funny, and inspirational.” He promised that the team has “embraced all the things that David would have loved as a storyteller” and that they hope their vision will prove “as timeless as David’s book.”

The project, which comes from Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios, hasn’t officially been greenlighted yet, but prospects seem promising. On top of that, Odenkirk’s involvement bodes well, given how well his other AMC shows have performed. (After winning over audiences on Breaking Bad, Odenkirk’s  character got a series of his own, Better Call Saul.) The actor will executive produce alongside his producing partner Marc Provissiero, Ryan,  Myers, Joshua Astrachan, and Marney Hochman.

Three acclaimed but overlooked Apple TV series headline this weekend's watchlist.
A still from Dark Matter (2024) on Apple TV

Some of the best series on Apple TV have earned great reviews, yet none of them get talked about nearly as much as they deserve. That's why I have included three different genres in this weekend's binge list, which is based on a bestselling sci-fi novel, a beloved wine manga, and a true-crime memoir. The best part is that each one of these shows manages to outdo its source material's reputation on the screen.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best free movies, and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Prime Video's home screen has looked the same for years, with rows of tiles that rarely matches what you actually want to watch. Amazon is betting AI can change that, and Jeff Bezos is personally driving the effort.

Bezos reportedly directed Prime Video head Mike Hopkins to overhaul the streaming service so AI sits front and center, according to Reuters. The project carries an internal codename, Lighthouse, and it's already reshaping how the app might work.
