Nick Kroll brings us along for his journey through puberty in Netflix animated series

Following the tremendous success of Bojack Horseman, its irreverent animated show for adults, Netflix has picked up a new animated series from comedian Nick Kroll called Big Mouth, reports Variety.

Big Mouth, which follows a teenage boy navigating through puberty, has been given a 10-episode order. The series is based on the younger years of Kroll and his best friend since first grade, Andrew Goldberg, who happens to be a writer and producer on another twisted animated series, Family Guy. In fact, the characters even have the same names. Though Kroll will voice his namesake character, the character based on Goldberg (and named Andrew) will be voiced by comedian and Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney.

The rest of the voice cast includes a who’s who of the comedy world. It features Saturday Night Live alums Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen, along with Jordan Peele (one half of comedy duo Key & Peele), and Jenny Slate, who most recently lent her voice talents to the Disney movie Zootopia.

Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, joked that while there are few things that keep her up at night, “Nick Kroll’s adventures in puberty is one of them.” As a result, Big Mouth was given the green light with “few questions asked.”

Given Kroll and Goldberg’s lengthy friendship, the former says the show has been “30 years in the making.”

Kroll is best known for his role in the FXX comedy series The League, and for his own Comedy Central series Kroll Show. He was also, at one point, a contributing writer for Chappelle’s Show, and tours the U.S. with his stand-up act. He was most recently on TV in the talk-show parody series Comedy Bang! Bang!

Both Kroll and Goldberg will executive produce Big Mouth, along with Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. Netflix is producing the show, which is set to launch on the streaming site next year.

A still from Dark Matter (2024) on Apple TV

Some of the best series on Apple TV have earned great reviews, yet none of them get talked about nearly as much as they deserve. That's why I have included three different genres in this weekend's binge list, which is based on a bestselling sci-fi novel, a beloved wine manga, and a true-crime memoir. The best part is that each one of these shows manages to outdo its source material's reputation on the screen.
