Apple iPhone 5 review roundup

iphone 5Although the iPhone 5 has already sold out as a pre-order, and finding one on release day is going to be a challenge, there are a lucky few who’ve already got one in their hands.

everything iphone 5Apple carefully selects the journalists who get to review a new iPhone prior to launch, and while we’re sure they’re all impartial, it’s fair to say few will be ending their piece with “OMG Apple sux, Android rulezz!!11!.”

Our own review will be along shortly, but in the meantime, here’s what the chosen few are saying about Apple’s latest and potentially greatest iPhone yet.

MG Siegler, TechCrunch

All you need is a single line from Apple fan Siegler to know what he thinks: “I’ve had the opportunity to play around with the latest iPhone … I won’t beat around the bush: it’s fantastic.”

Shane Richmond, The Telegraph

The Telegraph awarded the iPhone 5 five stars in its review, calling it “arguably the most beautiful object Apple has ever produced,” and “a great smartphone made even better.”

Tim Stevens, Engadget

No star ratings here, but the words “the iPhone 5 absolutely shines” and “the best iPhone yet” give you a good idea of Engadget’s opinion. It was noted that iOS 6 felt “a bit dated” though.

Edward Baig, USA Today

Succinct and to the point, Baig says “People have always had lofty expectations for the iPhone 5, especially as the competition stiffens. In delivering a fast, attractive, LTE-capable and larger-screen handset, Apple has met those expectations with a gem.”

Charles Arthur, The Guardian

Another 5 star review. Arthur describes the lightweight iPhone 5 as “floating in the hand,” and the responsiveness of the screen as “though you’re touching the pixels.”

Stuart Miles, Pocket-Lint

Pocket-Lint has given the iPhone 5 4.5 stars, describing it as “an extremely polished smartphone that oozes appeal,” but like Engadget, says “iOS 6 adds little to the story over iOS 5.”

Harry McCracken, Time

“Apple’s mojo remains fully operational,” McCracken comments on the public’s initial disappointment following the iPhone 5’s launch, before advising people to “ignore the naysayers,” as the iPhone 5 is “one terrific smartphone.”

Walt Mossberg, AllThingsD

After a “quick look” at the iPhone 5, Mossberg says “Apple has taken an already great product and made it better, overall.”

Jim Dalrymple, The Loop

“I can tell you that it’s gorgeous,” says Dalrymple when talking about the screen, and says the effect of the faster processor, graphics and LTE connectivity “give you the feeling of never waiting for anything.”

Scott Stein,

A four star rating stands out as lower than other reviews, but CNet still calls the iPhone 5 “absolutely the best iPhone to date, and it easily secures its place in the top tier of the smartphone universe.”

Vincent Nguyen, Slashgear

Slashgear highlights the screen as one of the iPhone 5’s best features, with Nguyen calling it “a truly beautiful display, with the best colors I’ve seen on a mobile device,” before adding “overall, it’s a beautiful piece of engineering and design, and something you need to hold in your hand to appreciate.”

John Gruber, Daring Fireball

Gruber sums up his thoughts on the new iPhone, and closes out our roundup, in the very first line of his review: “The iPhone 5 is really nice” he says.
