At the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Toyota revealed the Corolla Furia Concept, a design study that the Japanese automaker points out will heavily influence the next-generation Corolla.

“The Corolla Furia Concept is an early indicator of where our compact car design may lead in the future,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division in a press release. “It blends a heightened emphasis on dramatic design and modern elements of high technology to generate curb appeal that will surprise a lot of people.”

And dramatic it is. The current Corolla is a veritable snooze-fest. Were it a movie it would be filmed in black and white and center on old-timey technology like the printing press. The Furia Concept couldn’t be any different; it’s more a Michael Bay movie sans the gratuitous explosions and nausea-inducing camera movements.

Toyota says the Furia’s design is centered around a theme of “Iconic Dynamism,” which above everything else, creates a confident and aggressive appearance designed to appeal to more youthful buyers. LED head and taillamps, combined with carbon fiber accents help further this cause, while the Furia’s raked hood and gaping front fascia lend a greater degree of exuberance and athleticism to the overall look.

If the Furia really is a glimpse into the future of the Corolla’s design language, mark us down for two. But more than that, it’s refreshing to know that Toyota’s design studios isn’t the walking land of the dead we’ve been led to believe.

Tesla to begin production on new, more affordable models
Tesla Model 3

With competition increasing from Chinese and other automakers, Tesla boss Elon Musk revealed on Tuesday that his company is planning to begin production of new, more affordable models in “early 2025, if not late this year.” Notably, that's earlier than the previously stated date of late 2025, though whether Musk actually succeeds in meeting the earlier production time frame is another question entirely.

The news came as Tesla released its latest quarterly figures. Revenue for the electric vehicle maker came in at $21.3 billion, down from the $23.3 billion it reported for the same three-month period a year earlier and also down from the $25.2 billion reported in the previous quarter. Profit reached $1.1 billion, marking a 55% fall compared to the same period a year ago.

Lamborghini Urus SE front quarter.

Lamborghini built its reputation with outrageous supercars like the Miura, Countach, and Diablo, but today its bestseller is the Urus SUV. And a new plug-in hybrid version of that car could make or break the automaker’s push to hybridize its entire lineup by the end of 2024.

Debuting at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, the Lamborghini Urus SE is the automaker’s second plug-in hybrid, following the Revuelto supercar unveiled in 2023, and precedes a plug-in hybrid replacement for the Huracán, which will be unveiled later this year.
