Once you've done and seen everything there is in the base Fallout 4 game, it's time to venture out beyond the Commonwealth. The Far Harbor DLC was the first to add an entirely new zone to the game, but it doesn't stick it onto the existing map. It doesn't take long to get yourself to the new island once you know the proper steps, but you need to do a few specific things in the game before it will be an option, and the game won't tell you what those requirements are. This is all you need to know about how to start the Far Harbor DLC in Fallout 4.
How to start the Far Harbor DLC
The only prerequisite to starting the Far Harbor DLC is to make some initial progress in the main questline. Specifically, you need to have met Nick Valentine, which is a very early objective called "Getting a Clue." Once you have, you can access the DLC.
Step 1: Begin your game of Fallout 4 and open the Pip-Boy to see a quest called "Far From Home."
Step 2: This quest will prompt you to listen to the Valentine's Detective Agency radio station, which in turn will direct you to go see Nick Valentine's assistant Ellie in Diamond City.
Step 3: Ellie will give you the details of the quest and send you to the northern coast of the map to the Nakano Residence.
Step 4: Go inside and speak to Mr. Nakano, then explore the house to collect his tapes, and he will let you use his boat to travel to Far Harbor to reach the new zone.
